Focus RS
Like the new RS.. it it was just 200 kg lighter..
I assume the RS is using a similar system to the Ecoboost Mustang:

And in the realm of totally irrational, this is a deal killer to me.

The UK owners manual shows fuse F22: Active noise control. Electronic sound enhancement.
It is the second part that has people thinking its step past just cancelling out bad harmonics. http://www.focusrs.org/forum/30-focu...peakers-3.html
The pistonheads review also talks about it "Why the need for fake, synthesised noise over the speakers then? It's not as bad as some but still fairly loathsome in practice and principle." http://www.pistonheads.com/news/driv...s-review/33617

My Golf R had the same type of thing, not through the speakers, but through a box that was bolted onto the firewall.
I didn't mind it and it was just a unplugging of a harness away from defeat anyway.
My Fiesta ST has the pipe of actual intake noise into the cabin and it's a little buzzy but it's also defeatable as well by just disconnecting the pipe and capping it off.
You guys are silly.
Cool bro, thanks for sharing your opinion. I've never heard either cars referred to as "boring ****boxes", and the multiple Car of the Year awards for the GTI would beg to differ with you.
Its worse than piped noise, "Electronic Sound Enhancement" is played through the speakers. Might as well just get a CD of a V10 to listen to and key the volume to your rpms http://www.focusrs.org/forum/30-focu...-speakers.html

Using technology to play white noises or reduce in cabin noises is fair imo.
Using speakers to reproduce a fake sound of the engine is a gimmick. But if it has an easy to disable functionality built into it then who cares.
Some of the explanations of what people think is happening in that ford thread are funny.

RWD > AWD >>>>>>>>>>>>>> FWD
Man, boosted FWD can only carry you so far. I hated my GTI for this reason. Even with full exhaust, intake, and a tune, the car would NOT put down power through a corner. I had a buddy with one with a wavetrac, and while better, nothing like what you could do in an R.

Oh come on. It's not that bad and I'm sure you can defeat it like you can in most cars these days.

If it's easy to defeat, no problem. Unfortunately I doubt it will be.
Saw a New RS at our local auto show here in saint Louis! I will say it is a very nice looking car! Had no sticker with prices or performance numbers and it was locked so you couldn't open it or get inside...
...and it was the first thing I defeated when I got the car.
There is control over the faux sound in the Focus ST and the Mustang as well in the ECU.
Presumably you could just pull the fuse. But they you are still lugging around useless dead weight unless you pull the box, wiring, etc. I just think its "cheesy" that Ford added it to the car (increasing cost & weight) in the first place.
