track car suggestions / discussion
They are heavy awd cars that go through consumables quicker than other cars. If you are okay with that, and you stay up on maintenance, they are pretty good.
The faster you start going in a Evo, the faster things wear out.
Depends on track, weather you are tracking in, power output. Oil cooler and radiator (first) need upgrading if you are fast and track in 80F+ weather most of the time.
Yes, but see above.
Not even close to the crap in the 10. You have to be on seriously sticky rubber and a ton of G's before it comes up.
The 8/9 have oil issues with slicks and high G's with sustained RPM, but you have to be pretty fast before it shows up.
5 speed is stout. 6 speed sucks. If you are going to track an Evo, don't even think about a 6 speed. I went through two 6 speeds before I swapped in a 5.
I would say get a 05+ so you already have a front LSD to start with. Makes a pretty big difference on track. Unless you can find a 04 RS.

I've never seen one last long under prolonged track abuse. To me, it seems like once you start mucking around with the engineering, you end up throwing good money after bad, but that's what I've seen. YMMV
Stock radiator. Stock oil cooler. I forgot to mention I added in 2" brake ducting to offset the high temps.
I've had no issues with my transmission. Though, any track where you need more than 4th you will be held back because the cruising gear in 5th is not ideal for track use.

whats 4th top out at?
I would just run the stock tranny first and then see what needs changing to suit your needs, but that's just me.

I had the TRE ultimate ratio in my Evo 8 MR when I swapped in the 5spd. It was, and continues to be the best transmission I have ever used. It was almost perfect at the track I frequent.
In contrast, the stock 5 spd in my Evo 10 absolutely sucks at the track I frequent. Way too short.

I think you should aim to get a RWD car, like an older M3, S2000, or Corvette. Obviously this is an Evo forum, so getting an older Evo is a very popular choice. Evos are terrific track cars, but if you want to learn how to be faster, a naturally aspirated RWD car is the way to go. High HP AWD cars hide mistakes; you can post relatively quick lap times even if you mess up virtually every corner. That was my experience at least.
yeah, I wouldn't bother doing anything about it unless I needed a rebuild, which I hope it doesn't come to. I'm not actually racing, just lapping for fun, so having a less than ideal 5th isn't exactly that big of a deal
You are going to have to raise your budget. I don't think 10-15k is going to get you a track day ready evo.
For 10-15K you could get a sti engine swapped 2.5rs http://www.rs25.com/forums/f171-fs-cars-sale
Here is a gorgeous example http://www.rs25.com/forums/f171/t215...sti-2-0-a.html though you would likely want one with a newer engine with OBDII for emissions testing.

Ah then a Miata would be pointless, unless you grabbed a supercharged NC.

sti swapped rs is a cool car, but I don't believe in suby turbo engine's reliability... my sister had an sti
I wouldn't track a EJ motor if I was looking for reliability.
