Yes, that lol. My car on the track tune pulls the stock Evo 8 5th gear (.72:1) just fine. But it's about 390whp on a mustang dyno...lol.

Depends on track, weather you are tracking in, power output. Oil cooler and radiator (first) need upgrading if you are fast and track in 80F+ weather most of the time.

Yes, but see above.

Not even close to the crap in the 10. You have to be on seriously sticky rubber and a ton of G's before it comes up.

The 8/9 have oil issues with slicks and high G's with sustained RPM, but you have to be pretty fast before it shows up.

5 speed is stout. 6 speed sucks. If you are going to track an Evo, don't even think about a 6 speed. I went through two 6 speeds before I swapped in a 5.

I would say get a 05+ so you already have a front LSD to start with. Makes a pretty big difference on track. Unless you can find a 04 RS.
thanks for the info

thats another one I'm seriously considering... but the fact that its about the same price as an evo... I'm really kinda leaning evo. one of the biggest turnoff's about the s2k for me is the peaky powerband, not much different than my RSX was. where as the evo has a broad powerband thanks to that turbo. that was one of the things I like about the FRS, it may have been equally slow, but it had a much broader powerband...

Stock radiator. Stock oil cooler. I forgot to mention I added in 2" brake ducting to offset the high temps.

I've had no issues with my transmission. Though, any track where you need more than 4th you will be held back because the cruising gear in 5th is not ideal for track use.
so if I end up needing a rebuild, go for oem spec internals?

whats 4th top out at?

The Evo 8 4th will do 128-130mph with a 25.5" tall (stock height) tire at 8k rpm's. Evo 9 is a bit slower because 4th is shorter.

so 120ish with 7k... I wouldn't rev it to 8k for longevity's sake. thats prolly just barely cutting it for The Ridge but too short for Pacific Raceways..

I would just run the stock tranny first and then see what needs changing to suit your needs, but that's just me.

Stock cams and turbo are pointless to rev past 7 anyways. Realistically, you're looking at about 115mph in 4th.

I had the TRE ultimate ratio in my Evo 8 MR when I swapped in the 5spd. It was, and continues to be the best transmission I have ever used. It was almost perfect at the track I frequent.

In contrast, the stock 5 spd in my Evo 10 absolutely sucks at the track I frequent. Way too short.

Ah then a Miata would be pointless, unless you grabbed a supercharged NC.

I think you should aim to get a RWD car, like an older M3, S2000, or Corvette. Obviously this is an Evo forum, so getting an older Evo is a very popular choice. Evos are terrific track cars, but if you want to learn how to be faster, a naturally aspirated RWD car is the way to go. High HP AWD cars hide mistakes; you can post relatively quick lap times even if you mess up virtually every corner. That was my experience at least.

yeah, I wouldn't bother doing anything about it unless I needed a rebuild, which I hope it doesn't come to. I'm not actually racing, just lapping for fun, so having a less than ideal 5th isn't exactly that big of a deal

You are going to have to raise your budget. I don't think 10-15k is going to get you a track day ready evo.

For 10-15K you could get a sti engine swapped 2.5rs http://www.rs25.com/forums/f171-fs-cars-sale

Here is a gorgeous example http://www.rs25.com/forums/f171/t215...sti-2-0-a.html though you would likely want one with a newer engine with OBDII for emissions testing.

yeah, I hear what you're saying... and still kinda fighting between evo and s2k... but I kinda really want an evo... and besides, mine wouldn't be high power, track tune would prolly be between 250-280 whp

yeah, I know. I'm willing to put a bit more in for the evo

sti swapped rs is a cool car, but I don't believe in suby turbo engine's reliability... my sister had an sti

you can always turn down the boost. my Evo X made 350ish whp for my street tune and 280 whp for my track tune (which I never ended up using)

Good idea. I tuned at a Subaru-centric shop for awhile. The engine build ratio was about 8 EJs to 1 4G. It was pretty eye opening.

I wouldn't track a EJ motor if I was looking for reliability.

That alone was the reason for my evo purchase in 2008. I was comparing both platforms at that time and saw the grenade rate on the EJ motor.
