New Supra Specs and Pricing
It will be interesting to see what, if any, cool Supra parts the Z4 doesn't get.
On paper, the 6-cylinder Z4 just looks like a more impressive version of the Supra, albeit with a higher price tag to match.
The Supra did put down an amazing 1.07g on street tires in C&D's instrumented testing, which is an impressive number for an all-stock vehicle.

other than a manual transmission, what makes the Z4 more impressive? (genuine question, not being a smart ***, I haven't looked at the Z4 at all except to check if the manual box is an option)
Numbers look good...and make it seem like power might be underrated. Only thing I don't like from the reviews is the slow steering rack which could be a deal breaker for me.
I honestly thought the same before I really started looking into/researching it. The only thing keeping me away is the transmission, since it would be my daily driver and I want it to be fun.
The USDM Z4 M40i gets approx. 50 more horsepowers than the Supra, although the Z4 won't have a manual transmission in North America. Only the M20i Z4s in overseas markets will (similar to the Japan-market Supra, which will have the manual option with the smaller engine).
Z4 comes with better engine components and higher power output from the factory. BMW didn't want to give their best motor parts to Toyota, but the Toyota engineers claim the Supra motor is still very stout. As far as I can tell, no reporters have truly tested both the Z4 and Supra on equal grounds yet.
One reviewer who has driven both cars hinted that the Z4 steering rack felt more precise. I don't recall any word on speed, just subjective feeling.

It's the exact same engine. The Euro-spec Z4 M40i has a particulate filter to meet stricter European emissions standards, and as such, has less power (335 hp). The Supra has the same particulate filter, regardless of where it's sold, but BMW kept the filter off the USDM Z4.
Are you sure about that? R&T seems to think that the part numbers for the head, the pistons, rods, and most importantly, the turbocharger have different part numbers on the US-spec Z4: https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-car...mw-z4-engines/
BMW is great at engineering performance systems, etc. Toyota is great with their manufacturing practices (they test every nut and bolt on the car).
I can see BMW designing something (engine) and Toyota making improvements (reliability/consistency).
I think this car has a ton of potential.
