Went to an Evolution Autox school today. During one of my runs, my clutch slipped massively - 7000 rpm in 2nd gear and the car was only going 35 mph. Question: Is my clutch dead? I let the clutch cool down was able to drive the car home without any slippage. (But I was babying it...) Should I push my luck and run the next event with it? Would it damage anything else if I do?

Also, is there any STU legal clutch setup other than stock? Is there a legal OEM-like clutch that I can go to that is more durable than the stock setup?

Just reach 10K miles on my car. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Only 10k and you're slipping. You guys must be killin that car Danny.

I don't know of anything other than our stockers that are legal (which I don't agree with). You could put something in close to stock and I don't think anyone would give you greif about it. As long as it's not a uber-puck lightweight clutch.

Its not uncommon for IX clutches to go between 10k and 20k miles, especially those that are used in competition. I've done over 5 dozen clutch installs and the overwhelming majority of the IXs I've done were all under 20K. The VIIIs typically last over 50k for some odd reason. Side by side comparisons between the VIII and IX disc look identical but, they obviously did something different, maybe the compounds.

Technically the SCCA dictates a stock clutch only, which I too don't agree with but, Rhys Millen Racing makes a replacement disc that works with the OEM flywheel and pressure plate. I'm sure the a few more of the major cluch companies could also whip something up to work but, RMR is the only I know of that advertises one. Like Dave said, so long as ur not running a Twin disc and a lightwieght flywheel no one is going to care.

Anyway, if are interested I am more than capable and willing to do the install if you are looking for someone. Just click on the CLT Racing link below for my cell number.

Thanks Dave and Adam. I was all proud of running fast laptimes at the school, and that awful smell appeared.

I think I will byte the bullet and put a new stock clutch setup in. I don't want to cause any problem next year if the car is competitive. Then again I might burn up the new clutch before next September, and that would suck...

Adam, I am in Rockville, Maryland so I am a little ways from you. I will try to find a shop closer by (not sure if my car will make it up there). Thanks for the offer and I will try to get the car fix by the next AI/Philly event so you can check out the Wing.

Dave, see you at Ripken this weekend. Thanks again.

One clutch to check out is RRE's No-Name clutch. Should pass a cursory visual inspection (is there such a thing for a clutch?).

But that doesn't make it legal. I don't condone cheating, but we both know how hard it is to pull out the disc for a visual inspection and that nobody is going to do that for a local event. It would seem silly to me to pick one for its visual appeal.

My stock clutch was hurting in the last WDCR event. I had to abort my second run when the clutch slipped on the start and wouldn't stop slipping in the run. I left easy on my last two runs and it was okay, but my times suffered. My car has just over 10K miles and, other than about 10 very easy drag passes a couple years ago, has only been raced autocrossed for about a season and a half (never launched on the street at all). I think my pump gas power is probably about the same as Dave Mac. It would kill me off if I had to put a stock clutch in to stay legal. Time to come to SM

I guess it's kind of a blessing to live at high altitude ( > 5000') and out west where the gas is crappy. I don't really make enough power to necessitate and aftermarket clutch. I can launch all day here without any problems. On my first practice launch in topeka -- slip, slip, slip.

It would be nice to have the power, but it's better not to have to buy parts.

No worries Danny. FYI - I have customers from as far south as South Carolina

I'll be at Ripken on the 11th for sure. The 10th is up in the air though. I'm definately interested to see the wing though so hopefully the car is running for the event.

Hello, just trying to verify if 2pc rotors are legal in STU. I didn't see the rulebook mentioned specifically that 2pc is not allowed in STU, but it's not allowed in SP. Can someone confirm this? Thanks!

I'd say that they they are allowed. Some argue that if its not specifically noted that they are permitted than they are not legal so its all about how you interpret the rules. I've seen a few Evos and STis running STU with 2-piece rotors and in fact I have been contemplating installing them on my car.

Not sure that's an argument or matter of interpretation. I thought the rules explicitly state that if a mod is not expressly permitted, then it's prohibited?

14.6 BRAKES
A. Cross drilled and/or slotted brake rotors are permitted, same size
and type as standard.

14.12 STX
7. Brake rotors may be replaced with any rotor of equal or larger
diameter made from a ferrous or aluminum alloy.
Any rotor is the key term here. ferrous (disc) or aluminum (hat). When a rule says "any" or "unrestricted" that's pretty much what it means.

Going back to a preivous post regarding two piece rotors:

14.12.7
"Brake rotors may be replaced with any rotor of equal or larger
diameter made from a ferrous or aluminum alloy. Calipers are
unrestricted, but must mount to the original attachment points."
Damn, Steve beat me to it!
