Never really thought about permanent or semi permanent mounting. That's a good idea. Did you get rid of the OEM gauge panel or just move it up to the radio spot?

Andy had already put the gauge panel up in the radio spot.

How is a waste gate dump NOT legal? As per unrestricted drivetrain, this has to be a legal configuration. Right? Aside from being overidden by safety considerations (BS) this should be legal in my mind....

All SM specific rules overide previous class' rules, for instance Street Touring or Street Prepared

It's never going to be a violation of the class preparation rules.

It might be a violation of 3.3.3.B.15 under "Inspection Requirements":

15) Exhaust must exit behind driver or to the side of the car.
This is a safety issue, not an issue with the class rules, and normally wouldn't be something that would end up in a protest. The fact is that a car shouldn't even pass Tech inspection unless the exhaust exits behind the driver or to the side of the car -- meaning that the car shouldn't even be allowed to compete.

but if the dump tube exits to the side of the car and the rest of the exhaust exits behind the driver there is no safety issue.

I think the Inspection Requirement that Jack cited is dispositive on the external wastegate question. If exhaust out the front were legal, then lots of people would do it to save weight (turbo or no turbo).

If I weld in a roll bar with rear supports welded to the rear shock towers and then weld a horizontal bar between those two attachment points, would I be legal in SM? Or if I attach a second pair of bars from those same attachment points to a lower point on the main hoop, would that present a problem? I've looked at Appendix C in the rules and still have questions. Thanks.

It is legal and can be done. 2 reasons for not doing it.

- Loud - probably not enough room to stuff a muffler in there and many sites are beginning to have sound restrictions.

- Cone penalties - when you launch it or when you go past a slalom cone full throttle you can blow it over. (trust me, it's happened before, on an EVO)

Wife doing the same.
Matt, how much faster is the car on 285 VS the 275s?

Did you use to pick the rears before or stayed with the same spring rates and lift the rear because of the extra grip?

I'm asking because I'm moving to 295s(XP) and I'm trying to decide if I should start with spring rates higher than what would normally work for 285s.

The car is definitely faster on the 285s... but my driving has improved, along with my suspension over the offseason... so I dunno how much faster the 285s are.

I used to pick the rears up slightly before...about the same amount as now. Not that much, overall.

If I were going with anything 285+ I would go with some damn stiff spring rates. If I were going into XP, I'd go big *** tires all the way.. 315's or nothin

Why 315's in XP but not SM?? Do you think we could even get enough heat in 315's to make the grip match or exceed 285's?

315s would be a lot heavier and they are the same height as 275 40 17s. On my Camaro, I went from 275 V710s to 315 V710s all the way around and it made huge difference, but that's a much torquier, heavier platform.

Beats me. I just ask the local guys who are clearly faster than me what to run. I usually just listen to John (Kekek on this board) whose one fast M-F'er.

With two drivers, my guess is that we could get enough heat into 315's in warm weather

Hell, the 315/30/18 and 335/30/18 A6 have the same overall diameter, why not go 335?

With 285's the tire is against the trailing arm in the rear. At the front the 285's are hitting the inner fender. To use a 315, all of the additional tire width will be to the outside which will make your car at least 2 inches wider than it is now. the 335 will make the car 4 inches wider. You will also need to raise the car because of the additional height of the tire.
