2008 STU discussion
Vassago, theSSQV lands you in SM but, the clutch is allowed in BSP, however, the SSQV is not.
We've had that in the Detroit region for years - we call it TSM. It is usually one of the largest classes. I remember when we've had 25 entries in just that class - at a local event!
The racing was so close, in 2005 there were 3-4 of us that could have won the championship at the last race of the year. I ended up taking it by less than 1/2 a second margin after 7 races!

Believe it or not but, my region (Philly) I've been protested three times in the past 2 years for a bunch of miscellanous stuff, which I was able to prove otherwise. Our region is very, very strict when it comes to playing by the rules unless its a novice, than stuff is usually let fly. The only protests are usual against top guys in the class and in my region its myself, Corey Ridgick and one other guy. The rest of the drivers are seconds behind.

there is nothing illegal about the BOV in BSP.
According to section 15.10.D of the Solo rule book "no changes are allowed to blow-off/pop-off valves". According to section 15.10.E "compressor bypass valves are considered part of the air intake system and may be replaced or update/backdate...".
Now does the SEB considering a recirculate valve a "blow-off valve" or CBV, thats the arguement. I would argue the recirc valve is a CBV, however, as you right it the BOV would be illegal since you wrote it as a BOV and its considered a BOV where as the Evo came with a recirc valve.
If the SSQV is recirculated, as it should be to run properly, than yes everything is legal but, if it is vented to air as a BOV would be than its illegal since the car came with essentially a CBV.
When it comes down to it, at a regional event no one will care since its not going to give you an advantage whether its vented to the air or if its recirculated, in fact if its ventated to the air your at a disadvantage.

does not matter whether it's recir. or VTA, on the EVO it is ALWAYS considered a CBV, not a BOV.
If you read the definition of BOV and CBV, you will see what I mean. I can't even think of a vehicle that has a BOV as defined by the solo rules. . . ?

the only car that i can think of that has a BOV by the SEB definition is the old champ cars.
whatever I called it, it's still legal. the function of the valve is not affected by where the discharged air is routed.

Vassago: As others have mentioned "technically" your car should be in BSP due to the clutch and CBV but check with other members in the region and make sure they are OK with you running in STU. You could run BSP-ST if people are being strict. It's not like the clutch or CBV is going to give you any real advantage ... For tires concentrate on the Dunlop Z1 starspec, Yokohama Advans and Bridgestone RE01-Rs
evo8dad: Sucks in your region (Philly) I guess. I personally don't care whether my competitor's cars are upto the "T" according to the rule books. Heck I even don't mind that one of my competitors knowning runs a modified CBV etc. All I care about is how close of a competition I'm getting.
The best part of STU for me is the minimal arrive and drive effort. I couldn't bear changing tires in the sweltering heat.

Lol dawaorstplaya! after racing for so many years changing tires at the course sucks. And for some organizationally or alphabettically challenged clubs Street and modified classes always seam to be the last run group.
So there you are in your SM/SP car changing tires when all the stock classes are driving home.
Only downside is 'that guy': you know the one that shows up an puts his street tires on! or the other one that brings his st car in on a trailer. Yeah that guy is prolly serious enough that hes gonna beat ya! not too mention the number of heat cycles the tires get everyday on the way to work

in my region, the only other car in stu is an e36 m3.... there are a couple cars that are running ostu, but i think the open class separates them from us (i'm pretty new to the classifications).... i'd really hate to be in bsp because then i would have to invest in some hoosiers or something crazy like that, where as the bmw guy and i have a pretty heated competition going on so far (he's winning, but he's been to skip barber at laguna and it's usually really close, one time he beat me by .07)... so i'm happy in stu right now, but i'd hate to get called out for mods... the bov is pretty noticeable (and stupid), but the clutch doesn't make too much of a diference.... and i just got a pm from one of the ostu evo owners who wants to sell me his jic flt-a2s with stiffer spring rates for 950 (they have 1500 miles on them), so i think i should go with that so i can have some money towards a tbe....

... in my local events I end up going faster than a lot of folks driving on AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRs
We don't really have alot of guys in STU that are that serious in my region. I am constantly fighting my inner demons that say 'go buy this' 'go buy that'. But then I think about the reward: 1st place ? I can buy a truckload of plaques, tshirts and koozies for the money of set of coilovers. Plus since everyone else seams to be in the same boat, I am in first place anyways without them
Most of my demons are about pax competition, I used to score pretty well and I dont totally feel I am in the right spot in the car yet...
