Tow Rigs, What do you have/use?
I get it, the shoe doesn't always fit. If I were you I wouldn't be even considering a second gen either. My truck isn't in bad shape by any means but I've been bitten hard by rust before, and I'd rather put myself in position to not have that be an issue in the future than turn a blind eye to it or spend lots of money fixing it. I really do wish I lived out by you to really enjoy my truck more. Sand is way more fun than mud.
I considered a super duty with the 7.3L gasser too. They are super solid trucks. But I just can't see myself being happy with a truck I can't jump and do fun **** with. Plus the super duties are TALL and I've already had some close calls with roof clearance before. The screw raptors are rated to tow 8k, I've done about 6500 before and it didn't break a sweat. I can't imagine it being any harder with an extra 100 pound feet lol.
I was not aware of the no lock rear diff in 2wd. I can only guess Ford did that to protect customers from themselves. Hopefully there's a way around it. Either way, not the end of the world.

Theres lots of threads on the 2wd diff lock thing, no one seems to have figured it out as of yet and the truck has been out for 4yrs.
Yeah, the rocker rust is def an issue on the midwest/east coast trucks that we don't really have out west. And i definitely wouldn't jump a superduty...lol.

Did the 1st gen raptors not have the AWD function or what was the reasoning the 2WD diff lock was eliminated on the 2nd gens? And, as letsgetthisdone stated, the best way to deal with the annoyances of the 10-speed is just to put it in Sport every time you drive. Sport mode plus some paddle shifters to override it would be a real nice time.

No one is really sure the reasoning ford removed the ability to lock the diff in 2wd, especially since it only on the raptor.
I find the 10speed to be very smooth and seamless in my truck. In tow mode with the trailer its pretty fantastic at downshifting without over downshifting. But I have heard a tune makes big improvements in the shifting.
have you guys ever put a tarp under the car (like the tires sit on it) if you've got an open trailer? i may be towing in some salt later this year, wondering if that would at least prevent a 6 hour salt spray under the body of the car.
My last track day was almost a year ago when it was cut short by catastrophic turbo failure. I limped home and decided to give the track day thing a break until I could get a proper tow rig. I also needed to let my wallet recover from a string of failures. Oh, and I also need a new tune because I don't trust my last one anymore. Well last Sunday I picked up a new F-150 XL. It's got a V8, 10 speed auto, tow package, and little else, but I got zero percent financing and the dealer agreed to add factory cruise control an no additional cost. Next steps are a camper shell and removable awning and of course a 16 foot trailer.
Took the new tow rig to Thunder Hill last Thursday. 65 MPH mostly flat drive. Trip computer says 16.5 MPG, I''s see it that's true when I fill it up next. Made the round trip on one tank with about 30 mile of range left over. I'm very satisfied with the truck so far.
I agree. Rule of thumb is tongue weight at 10% of total trailer weight. Too much tongue weight will make life extra hard on the truck, too little will make the trailer very unstable, sometimes dangerous.
The trailer also should sit level. So, even if tongue weight is correct, you need to select the correct hitch. But in the pic, the truck looks excessively squatted. My raptor doesn't sit that nose high with a trailer, and it sits almost level without a trailer.
just bumping for this question - i'm sure no one's done this, but wondering if a tarp under the car would hold and not somehow parachute the car off the trailer
That would be a sight lol. Look honey the race car is parasailing!
If it's stretched good and tight and strapped down, then drive on top of it it shouldn't have much room to deflect, but it will still make a ton of noise which would be a non-starter for me. Maybe if it was canvas instead of plastic. If you're trailer is open in the middle i'd simply lay some plywood down in the gap? As for the car make sure it's got a fresh ceramic coat on it and just rinse the hell out of it when you're home. I'd also go after any exposed areas under the car with undercoat spray where it may have worn off (jack areas).
