But someone has to be 'That guy,' and this time it's you. Consider a budget, reliable pick up that's utilitarian and will be good enough all day long.
Good enough? you mean I should be more American like and go for bigger is better?

Maybe i didn’t word everything correctly in my first post. I also use lots of sarcasm which some may miss. I've got some useful info from this thread but some doesn’t really pertain to me. I'm not pulling a big enclosed trailer with 10000lbs. I dont need to blow $20k on a truck I'll be using a few times a year. Everyone thinks you need a huge truck to pull 5000lbs.

I'll apologize to buschar for giving him crap about putting a supercharger on a tow truck. Something little like that can really set a guy off I guess… very edgy.

In the theme of that I'm preparing my 1962 Series2a for tow duty.(she is almost finished)

Even with the wimpy stock 4 cylinder packing 80HP she is rated, from Land Rover, to tow 4000LBS.The UK guys haul crazy loads behind these rigs......

If you have the right gear ratio, you don't need a lot of HP.

My heaviest load so far has been 2500LBS(payload and trailer)....
No you dont need to go to eu find crazy people...
Randy Zimmer older rally guy tows his rally subaru impreza with his dd subaru impreza, without brakes on the trailer. You should see him to drive on the trailer...
It might be sounds funny, but actually isnt. He endanger others possibly life threatening consecvenses.
So anyway juat because some people retared and ignorant, that makea any actual point for this towing thread?

Sorry but i highly see the point here what can be done vs what should be done for towing.... you are not alone, neither you own the roads.

Now,now Rob....."Zimmer" downno need for insults.I believe the Subaru's are factory tow rated for 2500LBS.....so a stripped out rally Subaru is not so out to lunch.

"Our" Escort might have been 1800LBS.....

Easily within VW's van thingy tow rating.

And you deleted the Land Rover's tow rating.......it has a tag next to its serial number stating 4000LBS tow rating from the factory.

The thread is what do you have/use.........not what should or shouldn't be legal.

I dont know what i deleted i am using my cell phone .
I do not try to insult you, i was talking about people who doesnt tow safely. And beeing honest as more power you have the towing will be safer too for everyone on the road. Maybe some people dont see it, but that doesnt mean they right...

What i dont get is, when experienced tower guys telling you something why is some coming back whith a lot less experience and try to make a weak argument. I mean i was townig cars since i am 19in years old( in eu you need a specual license for heavy towing like for car trailer) so i have many years abd countless miles behind me even on the german autobahn.....

I am not telling something just to spend meaningless money. There is a good base behind it.

I used my friend 2007 Dodge 2500 turbo diesel to tow to the track and it pulled up the mountain areas with no issue whatsoever. It's a 200 mile drive one way for me to Buttonwillow Raceway Park, and you go through all kinds of elevation changes. Going 65mph most of the way I averaged 18.5mpg with some WOT fun to pass semi's, other trucks who were towing slower, and to make fun of my friend who was towing his evo with a gas engine dodge I should be purchasing a dodge turbo diesel as well sometime later this year I'm willing to pay more for a better condition/lower mileage truck as well. For what i'm looking for it will be costing me about $22-$24k for the truck I want.

was this with a flatbed? is that the 6.7L? I went to Texas last fall with an enclosed car trailer in a 2010 turbo diesel. best i got was 10.3mpg.

Its a pretty tall enclosed trailer so i'm sure it generated plenty of drag. Truck only had 10k mile on it and people keep saying it takes until 50k for it to see better mileage.

No, it was a open car trailer, which is what I plan on using anyway. And yes, it was the later model 2007 that got the 6.7L engine in it
