A killed my clutch on Saturday at the DC Pro Solo. I have a few questions…I am running a 2008 Evo X.
_What clutch is everyone running in STU? |
_Are there any STU legal alternatives other than 100% OEM parts?
_Are the Evo IX and X clutches the same?

Is this Exedy STU legal? http://www.lancershop.com/customer/p...productid=5853I could only find the OEM CLUTCH DISC and Throw out Bearing…what other parts should I replace if I go 100% OEM

Thanks!

I was wondering where you were on Sunday, sorry to hear about that. It doesn't have to be an exact OEM clutch, it can be an OEM replacement. Looking at that link, I would think you would be okay, but probably good to confirm with one of the Evo boys here. I know they're all pretty familiar with clutch replacements *cough* Doug *cough* Geoff *cough*.

Congrats on another win Josh!

Yes, it really sucks…the car was definitely getting better after some sway bar changes. I was going to try more rear rebound for Sunday…but on my drive home it was obvious that the clutch was slipping a lot, hopefully it will make it to Agile to replace it as I don’t think I want to try that.

I am really surprised as I have “NEVER” launched this car since I got it and one Pro and the clutch dies? Maybe it was weak already…maybe is because this car is a pig…or maybe I need to learn how to launch and AWD car…

Thanks!

Also, I hear STi's do 7k RPM clutch drops all day without issues.

Regarding alternate clutches, here's the thread from last time this came up:

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/mo...al-clutch.html

Rules & available clutches have might have changed a bit since 2011, but the gist of the thread still stands. As long as you can definitively argue that another clutch is functionally identically to the stock clutch and offers no performance advantage. Unless someone produces a really good clone of the stock clutch, I think you're out of luck.

Nice job again Josh! Cant wait to race with you again

Clutches? Oh ya, the thing I change almost as much as my oil lol. A clutch kit from Mitsubishiparts.net is the best place to get one, and ya OEM only :/

an2ny - Launching an Evo is an art form, anyone can dump a clutch *cough* Josh *cough*

Just curious if you did the practice starts on Friday?

I did, but it was raining all day Friday, so it felt really good / easier on the wet as I could get some wheel spin, I only did 4 runs (2 and 2) so nothing extreme.

Also now that I am thinking about it: Fedex field Pro’s starts are in an incline so most people use the hand brake to hold the car at the lights…I don’t like to do that, so maybe that had something to do? As I am keeping the car from rolling back with the gas pedal for a few seconds…

Slipping the clutch at the line is (most likely) what burned out your clutch disc. Heat is what destroys the disc. The flywheel and pressure plate have a lot of mass, so they hold the heat and need to be allowed to cool down. I once burned a new clutch at a Pro by doing 6 practice starts with no waiting in between.

I learned to hold the handbrake every time, regardless of the start slope, to keep it routine.

Should I just get a new OEM disc or I also need to replace the pressure plate flywheel and bearing?
Are there any ways or techniques to cool down the clutch other than waiting? I parked the car with the hood open and was trying to pour some water around the transmission/ transfer case while waiting for the afternoon runs…I guess it didn’t work.

Just get the kit Geoff Autoxevo said, he's done ok at the Pros the last few years. The flywheel can be resurfaced or sanded if needed.
Main thing is the launch, just a quick slip to keep from bogging and shocking the drivetrain.

Crazy, I thought that was expensive, I bought my OEM clutch from Amazon in 2011... $256!! Went back and checked my order.. then looked up the same link/part today.. $355..

Only a 38.6% price increase over 2 years...
