GT3071 dyno results
This is a 3071r It is laggier than stock but darn nice and feels much better than a stock turbo in terms of power delivery and throttle response. Some of you know Im a huge fan of the stock turbo but Im doing this one. This car does have a cat and the DD makes it look like it takes a while to spool due to featherweight rollers and not the one ton dynojet rollers.

I agree with what you're saying, since a spool delay on one turbo should be equivalent to the delay on another turbo when on the same dyno. Meaning they should both spool faster on the street, and the discrepancy between both on the dyno and both on the street should be the same.

I think a major culprit on this car is the cat, a test pipe will increase boost response substantially.

Spool characteristics are affected by several parameters, including anything that affects VE (e.g. cams and the timing thereof, exhaust efficiency, etc...), as well as electronic factors.
This being the case, it is certainly possible to see noticeably different spool characteristics in two cars with the same turbo...but with other, significant hardware/software differences.

the thing is the 3071r should be capable of spooling faster than stock... with the right stuff... faster than stock meaning faster than the stock turbo with stock stuff.... i mean stock turbo with tbe is already spooling faster than stock... that's what i mean.
so it just makes me wanna be sure that the adapter thing isn't the culprit... although that cat is very annoying.

As for the example pertinent to this thread, the cat isn't helping anything, and the sheetmetal intake with its short runners certainly isn't helping anything where midrange VE is concerned. Nevertheless, this certainly provides grounds for the argument that given the amount of lag typically demonstrated by 3071r dyno sheets, I see little reason not to go to a larger turbo for the trouble. Another 100-200rpm of lag is certainly offset by another 50-100whp.

1) looking beyond dyno numbers is great, and i recommend it. but that is DIFFERENT from OVERLOOKING dyno numbers. Its too easy a way to hide in the bliss of ignorance that way. That lag doesn't look much better than the lag you see on some of the larger turbos.
2) historically, you only overlook dyno numbers when the results aren't what you want them to be. if that isn't a bad sign, i dont know what is.

The 3071 spools about 800-1000rpm later than the stock turbo during a fourth gear, 2000rpm and up roll-on on the road. This is with a cat. Without a cat, I'd expect those numbers to drop by 200rpm or so. If anyone thinks that this turbo is capable of spooling early than the stock twin scroll 16g, I'd urge them to consider otherwise. The advantage of this turbo is that it appears to be a wonderfully exploitable pump gas set-up. Going bigger on the turbo, on pump gas, will not result in any more power. Just more lag. For instance, this set up is making the same power as the tubular header'd GT35R made on the same car (but with a severely upgraded head). Oh yeah, it also makes instant boost whenever your above 3500rpm.
