I am totally new to this whole thing and got a few questions.
Under Low/High Octane Fuel map: Say if you put in 87 Octane gas, does the ECU automatically read the code from the low octane fuel map so that it will prevent detonation? From this can i conclude that it's possible to put in lower octane in the EVO but you'll not get the performance benefit of it?

This is a similar question what "tuffguy" has asked before. Is it possible to detune the ECU so that i can get better fuel economy? What kind of setting do i need to tweak with? Lower the boost level?

I don't think there's any type of sensor to detect fuel octane level. Therefore, the only way it knows to switch to the low octane map is by getting a lot of knock first; not exactly the best way. Plus, the low octane map runs quite a bit richer in the most driven part of the map from the looks of it, and the timing is retarded a lot. So I think the car will burn more gas, make less power, and maybe damage itself at the same time; not really worth it to save a little bit of money.

If you want to save gas, you can either do it through your right foot (don't get on it as much!), retune the fuel map (it's super rich stock), or I guess you can reduce the boost. Two ways I can think of to do that, through reflashing the ecu, or bypassing the boost control solenoid so that it'll only run off the wastegate pressure which I think is like 10psi.

to answer your first question, the low octane fuel map is used in closed loop. The target fuel adjustment is interpolated between the high and low maps in closed loop (or at least that is my understanding at this time)

It is possible to detune the ECU to improve fuel economy. The best way to accomplish that would be to lower the boost. You can run the engine a little leaner, but that will affect your emmisions and it will make the engine more knock prone.

I tired to upload a map and I could not get it to work. I think I forgot my immobilizer code into the new map because after I loaded it and tried to start the car it wouldn't turn over, just turned and turned but the ignition would not kick over. I then loaded my stock map and Wala, started right up.

So I have to set it to "Developer Mode?"

How do I find my immobilizer code? How do I get it to my new map so My car will start?

Help

You either buy a map from a "Tuner" who takes your money, runs three dyno runs on your car and loads a map from many he has until you car won't knock under WOT and wala, he has $400+++.

Or

You tune it yourself

Or

You can Give Sean Ivey a call and have him road tune your car and he IMHO is the best available.

Or

You can beg someone for a map with your mods.

Tuner flash, keeping it for backup

I am considering the Buschur flash. But I want to keep my warranty in tact as much as possible. If I use the ECUFlash product to back up my OEM Rom, then I will have a stock copy of my Rom. Also, I would think I should be able to backup my Buschur flash also. This way if I go to a dealer I just load the stock flash, and when I go racing, etc. I just reload the flash from Buschur.

I have an EVO IX MR (2006).

Am I getting this right?

As a tuner you can help him no problem.
