Yeah, he probably just was hoping that it wouldn't happen. He should have known though that steel on steel would be asking for trouble. Everybody knows that with bearings, you want dissimilar materials whenever possible. Maybe he could switch to a bi-metal bearing, steel backed to get the strength, with a .010 inch thick layer of some aluminum based bearing material on top, like aluminum-tin-silicon-copper or aluminum-tin-copper-nickel.
What do you suppose the loading is on these thrust bearings? 1000psi max? AlSnSiCu over steel is rated 8 times that much. You can wear into it .010" before it goes catastrophic.

Brad Penn oil is not synthetic. There are zero advantages to using a conventional oil, only disadvantages.

I would choose AMSOIL or Mobil 1 15w-50 over Brad Penn 10 times out of 10.

Anybody ran the 5w-40 Euro Amsoil blend here: http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/afl.aspx? I run it in our Mercedes but have wanted to try it in the evo. You can actually smell the detergents in the oil. Much different than the 10w-30 Amsoil I ran. I have since went to the German Castrol which essentially is a 40wt under temperature but wouldn't mind the Euro blend. Wheres the Amsoil guy when you need him?

A friend of mine uses mobil one 5w-30 on his car. Needless to say he has blown 2 reds and 1 black in less than a year. Funny he never mentioned this document. I'll be sure to let him know.

However green/black/red/stock/35r/whatever - it is still advisable to use oils that provide that better protection, now that ya'll know. It's only your turbo

FP used brad penn oil and seems like it worked well on their motor though...

this is just too confusing... mobil 1 vs brad penn vs valvoline...etc...etc.

now i will have to get motul

damn good info. I never got this info from FP when I got my turbo. Ill switch but choosing which one is tough.

A lot of oil threads lately that seem to point out the same thing; high zinc and phosphorous content, am I correct? If so, then all we're really saying is everyone should be running a full synthetic RACE oil, no matter how built your engine is, or what turbo you have... am I right?

You're partly right, partly wrong.

Everyone should be using a Group IV synthetic, yes.

You're wrong about race oil. Race oil is intended for engines that get rebuilt every few thousand miles. Do you fit into this category?

A better choice is a Grp IV synthetic with a detergent package (race oils do not have this). As for ZDDP content, that is most pertinent to those using FP Red and FP Black, due to the bushing material. It hasn't affected anyone else, although I recommend avoiding GF-4 oils simply because better options are readily available.
