Thanks for info.... specially ECU comments.

Btw really not trying to screw anyone. just avoiding a common generliazation that young adults with fast cars beat on the car alot and cause it to fail one way or another. I get looks pulling up for an oil change. One time actually had an employee of my dealership ask me if it was my car. i replied yes then recived a sigh and a dirty look =/ kinda sad but it does happen. And i know that if i pull in with exahust or an intake or something minimal i will be scolded for it. I really dont like when this happends. In which case i would take mods off before going to the shop not for Fraud but becuase i dont own an evo becuase i like that kind of attention...... Anyone else have this happen ?

I know this is late, but I am indeed a rube.

My father owns 19 dealerships and I work for a large japanese car manufacturer.
Just because I do not own a car you assume I know nothing about the car buying process, which is untrue. I made sure to accompany my father when we were purchasing a car in 1996, and then again in 2003. You might think I'm trying to stick it to the man, but really I'm just trying to say that Mitsubishi is not a company known for their customer service. You wouldn't know that, though, as they were stuffing customer complaints in a locker for years. I didn't mean to draw conclusions about your character, or your father's character; please forgive me for getting riled up. I do admit to being taken. Every time I buy a product, I pay someone's salary. When buying a car, my father did not pay very much over invoice ($600 over invoice), which is nothing compared to the 10 000 dollar plus dealer markups that you see on cars like the Evo MR or the NSX. Is that making a profit or making a killing? That is no different than what happens to a simple man when he tries to buy a car. Please ask your dad's salesmen what they think when they see such a man.

If that previous post about your dad owning 19 dealerships was made by someone other than the real EVOTEXAS, forgive this post.

westside, first of all, try and recognize when the thread has moved on. second, i don't know if they teach it in HS these days but grab an economics book and read up on supply and demand and what dictates price. this entire country's economic system, more than just the car industry, is based largely in part by capitalising on people's insatiable desparation for material possessions. whose fault is it for paying too much? the enterprising seller or the desparate buyer? good question. and a good lesson in self control.

yeh the ECU freeze data logs been in GM cars for the longest time (80's on selected models).

The guy who crashed his corvette doing 160mph in 35mph zone, killing himself and his wife, was solved by this "black box of the automobile".

Some of the ECU data log goes far back as recording every 5 minute intervals. Privacy/constitutional issues does come in play here.

By the way, tomorrow I'm going to my friendly Mitsubishi dealership to get an Evo catalog. My dad and I are researching whether or not the warranty is made in bad faith. Before you call us fools, be forewarned he is a law professor, so I am the only fool

Have to agree, that was pretty funny

Despite this BMW claimed that the motors were overreved even though it should be impossible to do. The ECU freeze frame data was called into question. I'm not sure if the data ended up being faulty or if the SMG ECU was failing to shift soon enough.

Anything you do can and will be held against you if Mitsubishi can dredge it up.
Whoa... Whoa...

Where did you get this information?

The last two versions of M3's were the E36 and E46.

The E36 M3 had a nasty habit of letting you over rev the engine producing the much dreaded "money shift." This usually occurred when people were trying to down shift from 5th to 4th - they would accidently hit 2nd. BMW techs were able to see the over rev because it records rpm data real time.

The E46 version on the other hand had a problem with early production cars. Most notably the 2001 - 2002 models. Due to some type of harmonic imbalance rods were being thrown for no apparent reason. This prompted BMW to extend the engine warranty to 100k miles. At first BMW fought the claims until they studied the problem further and did indeed find fault with the early run cars.

*** back on topic ***

I've always been of the mind - you gotta pay to play. Simple as that. Don't cry if something happens to your car because you moded the hell out of it. You knew what you were getting into - so don't pass the buck!

I read it on the Internet so it's got to be true! Seriously though, our stories aren't too far out of sync. The accounts I read follow what you described. What I had read was that BMW were fighting the claims stating that freeze frame data indicated an overrev condition. The owners were throwing up their hands and basically saying, "How the hell could that happen? I have an SMG. It's not supposed to allow an overrev." I didn't really follow the issue too closely since I don't own an M3. But as you said, BMW ended up backing up the problem.

The point of my story was that freeze frame data can and will get analyzed to attempt to prove the customer is at fault.

answer: who gives a *****!!

if you have the money to mod your car and not worry about a part not being covered if it fails due to that mod then by all means mod away, but dont sit here and whine about what you will do if mitsu finds out i modded my car. this is a completely useless thread.

p.s. just trying to keep it real!!
Have to agree with him. If u can't pay dont play.
