You can get around that. I had a full DC Sports TBE system on my Evo when I bought it 2 years ago. Well last October I was driving (normal 40 mph in a 40 mph zone) and a local county cop pulled me over for modified exhaust.

The workaround is to buy a full TBE system that looks stock and isn't super loud. I went with Buschur Magnaflow. You can use any standard DP and testpipe. I left my DC Sports DP and testpipe on the car and just swapped catbacks. The Magnaflow muffler looks like a stock Evo exhaust and isn't loud until you stomp on it. For normal driving it's fine and I haven't had any issue since.

Here's my drop on the subject.

I Live in Georgia, a city a bit smaller than metro atlanta.... but none the less, My Evo doesn't attact the attention of the cops, now on the other hand i also own a 95' 3000GT VR-4 and that attacts everything with blue lights on top of it. The thing i guessed with the Evo is that it "kinda" blends into the average car in traffic (WITHOUT The wing of course)

Factors: Black out FMIC. Wingless. Stock Wheels. Slightly Translucent Tint. Completely De-badged.

But, on the other hand i was pulled over one night because this "off duty" cop was in his personal 10' Mustang GT and He decided to do the typical brake check (Till i passed him doing the speed limit) and rear-riding scenario... so this caused me to speed of at a speed of 96 in a 55pmg zone... The reason i was doing this was to get away from this guy, not to intimidate him because no mustang will ever intimidate me. Anyhow, we were both pulled over and the patrolman that pulled us over said the reason his "off duty" cop friend was trailing me is because he didn't know what my car was and i got off with a verbal military courtesy warning.

It all depends on what your Evo looks like and what type of cop it is. Of course younger ones are going to know the model if they are familiar with imports. The older guys not so much.

Several of the newer import cars (Evo VIII/IX/X) fit the "street racing" profile UNMODIFIED from the factory, so what's going to happen?

You're going to get noticed and possibly even pulled over because you were profiled. Driving like a douche only draws more attention.

I heard a story of a guy in San Diego getting a modified exhaust ticket because the tip of his exhaust had 'STI' stamped onto it. Too bad for him the exhaust comes that way from Subaru. Car manufacturers want to appeal to the sport enthusiast and put features on cars that people would be drawn too. Sadly this is the very same culture that police are looking for.

Meaning... if you're 1mph OVER the speed LIMIT... guess what... you're speeding. Don't get all bent out of shape if the police officer is doing his job, whether you agree with the politics or not.
One of the things about "speeding" is the speed limits are set on a common engineering rule called the "85th" percentile rule. This is a statistical mechanism that means they will set (or should set) the speed limit at the mean of what 85 percent of the traffic is travelling at. So ... with that in mind, what gives the state the right to ticket with the speed limit as some hard and fast number for court purposes?

Statistical means to a hard set metric flies in the face of very unreasonable.

In reference to the OP, may I add another perception to the Evo. Don't slouch when driving. Frankly you're being lazy, and when you offer that perception on road, officers like to pull you over.

I personally haven't had any trouble with getting pulled over in the Evo. In fact I got pulled over much more in my Geo Prism (LSi) college car.

Its a bummer you get pulled over so often though!

Used to drive a 93 trans am. Got pulled over more than I can remember, received approx. 6-8 speeding tickets in that car in the span of a few years, regardless if I was driving fast or not. Then again it was my first car, was young, and I drove it like a douche.

I've only had the evo for a few months, but so far, no tickets, haven't been pulled over, and from what I can tell, they aren't even giving me a second look. Not that I don't drive it fast, far from it. I'm just a lot more careful/selective about where I do that. And I don't drive it like a douche.

Having a car that is somewhat "rare" compared to other cars makes it a lot easier for the cops to remember you every time they see you doing something that might not be illegal, but still pisses them off. You sit in a car for 12+ hours a day, patrolling the same 2 square miles, and tell me you wouldn't remember seeing a evo go WOT off every light. Might not be speeding, but still gives them an excuse to pull you over.

FWIW. I've got a TBE, catless, it's not overly loud unless you push it hard. Still haven't had a problem with it.

cops do tend to remember my car... one cuffed me and immediately started taking me to jail recently, just because he remembered my car and the ticket he gave me... luckily I talked my way out of it, on the way to jail, from his backseat, in handcuffs. lol.

Wait why would he even do that? What did you do?
Anyway iv only been pulled over once and that was when i got my car because the cop couldent see my temp plate. I sometimes speed on the highway but ONLY at night and if their isent alot of traffic. I have no tints, but my tail lights are blacked out, cant even seen my turn singles in the day lol. My friends tell me why i have a evo if i drive like a grandma, my reply to them is "so people can see my car " Im 19 and i think im on a good track with the law. The evo is also my 2nd car, the first being a 1995 eclipse GSX with a straight pipe and muffler.

I personally haven't had too much trouble with the locals pd or chp and I use to drive from Sac to Stockton in a lowered red 2g gsx with a huge fmic and full exhaust. Same with the Evo that I have now although I did get pulled over recently for going over the speed limit by 10 (45 in a 35, could have sworn it was 45) and the first thing the cop asked me was "Where's the fire?" to which I replied "No fire." Then he said to drive a bit slower and left.

Here in Nor Cal, I really don't have any problems with cops at all no matter what I am driving. I certainly agree with the other members about them being more lenient with muscle cars than imports. My Chevelle is slammed, runs a 7.5K RPM sprint car small block with full race exhaust, that probably idles at close to 90-100 db and its way over that when you hammer it. Meanwhile my Evo is totally stock and as long as I drive normally, I don't get bothered in either car at all. Even when I speed in them, I pay attention to the surroundings and its cool. I have never gotten a ticket in either car. Just a combination of how you drive and what your car looks like. I guess the whole Cali car culture probably helps too.

Well I can only speak from experience. I get pulled over more in the evo than my other cars.. The funniest experience I had was I was driving a bit to fast. But the Porsche next to me was as well. Cop pulls me over and says you know why I pulled you over and not the Porsche? I said no clue. He goes I expected you to be 20 year younger so I thought I could teach you a lesson. I am 37.. LOL.

It just seems that this cars demands attention and the wing doesn't help.

As utterly disgusting as the cop's actions may be, this probably isn't uncommon. When I was younger, I'd get pulled over all the time. I'm talking astonishing frequency compared to now, when I haven't been stopped for a moving violation in ~16 years.

I agree that it's more about how you drive and where you drive, and how your car looks. I've had my stealth for 5 years, and drive it wide open all the time, but only in certain places. Being wingless is defiantly helpful

Between both of my EVO's with 20% tint, (which is NOT legal here at all) full exhaust on both, and a aggressive driver who plays around on the street, in a town loaded with cops. My tickets in the past 3 years have been.. Well zero that have stuck. Been pulled over for exhaust, no front plate, and speeding twice which was my fault, but both times just a warning, because I don't **** off to the cops and admit when I'm in the wrong. Also got SUPER luck one time, power sliding (completely sideways of course) around an intersection at midnight right in front of the local boys hiding in the grass in someone's yard. Needless to say that warning was all I needed to chill out.

When I'm just driving normal besides the front plate, NEVER been bothered in either EVO.

Funny, I bought a trunk with a wing for my RS and got pulled over twice, converted back and no problems since! Face it, we can be easily profiled by the wing as a import @#$!%#. And if your driving like you ride your bike you might want to rethink how the local LEO's see or hear when you go by! Just my 2 cents! Look we all know why we drive EVO's in the first place but slowing my roll on a daily basis has kept me out of their crosshairs!!
