Yeah, this is the kind of feedback I'm looking for. It's worth it to spend an extra $120 per month, for warranty peace of mind. Also, what do you figure the market value will be on an average mile car in 36 months? My calculations showed about $18,144. Does this sound fairly accurate? Thanks.

I have a highly modified WRX. It will blow the doors off of most anything on the road.

My dream is to own a silver Evo VIII or EVO IX.

Oh, and the STi 6 MT IS as strong as they lead you to believe. It is bulletproof. I have had mine for a year now, making an excellent amount of horstpower.

But back to the WRX/STi/EVO, I am waiting for the 6MT and AYC ACD before I buy, but I would take the Mitsu anyday of the week.

It takes thousands to get the WRX on par with the Evo, and thousands more to make it better, where as you could spend all of those thousands making the EVO a true world class supercar.

Evo or Sti...more reliable down the road????

I live in Canada and thus do not have any experience with Mitsubishi vehicles. The company just started selling cars in this country a few months ago.
In terms of reliability which car will give me fewer problems the Subaru Sti or the Mitsu Evo??
I will be purchasing the vehicle in the States because I am moving down to California this fall.
Handling is more important to me than straight line speed and from reading the magazine reviews most of them say the Evo is the better handler. How much better??? By a lot or by a hair?? Could the Sti's handling be improved to match the EVo??
Personally I like the look of the Evo better, but if reliability will be an issue with the Evo then I would have to go with the Sti.
I know that Subaru offers an extended warrenty for the Sti, can you get an extended warrenty for the Evo??
I prefer the seats in the Evo, very comfortable to the Sti. I have not driven either car so my next move is to drive them. Any suggestions on finding vehicles to test drive?? Most dealers say that all their cars are pre-sold so how do you find one to test??
Thanks for your time.
Doug

There's too much new and too little time on the roads for the STi to make a fair comparison. Not to mention the Evolution seems to have some large inconsistencies from car to car (or likely driver to driver). It'll be hard to make a direct comparison. Most likely the responses you receive will be based on short term experiences or Mitsubishi vs Subaru.

Considering the STi's motor is completely new, there is not going to be any clear conclusion until 2-5 years down the road.

I was in the same boat as you, trying to find a daily driver. I chose the EVO, primarily b/c of one reason. The STI's have been known to detonate from the factory, and the climate I live in is very prone to detonation (extreme heat).

They don't detonate anymore. A ECU flash was released about a month ago, and has solved det on everyone who has had it done (at least on the NASIOC forums). A friend has a STi with the new map. I drove it in 115 degree heat with 91 octane gas in Tucson last Sunday. No det.

As far as I can see, this was an easier problem to fix than a clutch and transmission.

Tough call at the moment. Evo has the advantage of less electronic items such as the center diff. I have read a few posts complaining of it failing and several check engine lights. Personally I find the clutch and tranny issues less concerning as they are heavily impacted by driver abuse so one needs to take the posts with a big grain of salt.

Yea but what did the flash do? That is the question for all STI owners.

evo will still keep some resale value IMO... i wouldnt why it wouldnt bcuz the car is limited... and as for the sti i have heard turbo xs put the boost up a puny 3 psi.. and BOOM..detonation... a car that needs an ECU reflash to prevent from detonation IMO is going to detonate a lot sooner than cars that wouldnt need a reflash... make sense?

The reflash on the STi probably just runs the car rich(er). And I stand by there being no direct info for long term reliability. Only speculation and analogies.

My point earlier. If it does make them run richer, so much for their HP numbers.

Well, both cars are not reliable as Honda/Nissan/Toyota.
I have drove cars from both manufacture, Subaru seems to have less problem than Mitsubishi, and Subaru service is better (at least in south CT and NYC)

I think the Subaru will be screwed together better than the Evo...the build quality has always been better on Subarus....
I own an Evo and I love the razor edge handling and the raw kick in the pants...I wouldn't change it for the world...but I'm an enthusiast not JD Power....I know this does not help one bit with your quandry
