I am not an engineer with a slide rule (or laptop and diamond plate flooring) in my car, so I am not going to debate gear ratios or boost. All I know is that I smoked an STi last night so easily that it's a non-issue to me anymore...

Good to see some actual encounters between these two cars. I originally thought it was going to be an all out war on the streets between these cars.

EVO or WRX (modded)

I figured that the EVO would end up costing me $120 more per month, than having a 2002 WRX with about $3,000 in mods (wheels, tires, springs, shocks, and Vishnu Stg 0). Would you spend the extra coin and go for the EVO?

I promise you it still won't be as good! I can tell you that first hand... Nothin in my book is so well rounded as the EVO... I don't even "dream" about exotics anymore... All I need is my EVO...

You have to keep these in mind.

1. Wrx has soft engine and trans mounts that needed to be changed.
2. Small turbo, small injectors and small TMIC for future mods.
3. Everyone forgets that the wrx has R160 axles vs R180 from the STi meaning easier breakage under insane hp upgrade.
4. Wrx has a really crappy trans. I mean weak trans with weak clutch. Put a stronger clutch and break you trans!
5. Wrx has steel vs forged aluminum arms.
6. People always neglect brakes. We have brembo calipers which would be cheap to make our brakes top notch via rotors pads, and brake lines.
7. Chassis ridgity.
8. Huge steering wheel and slow ratio truck steering.

This is to give you an idea that it's cheaper to buy an evo if you have the money up front. Wrx and evo is not comparable. If racing is in your mind don't forget our evos have oil coolers too

Having been down the modded WRX(stage3 M2) path previously, I would refer specifically to item # 4 on gtr's list. Believe it, because it is true. The transaxle is just to weak and torque twist puts a huge strain on the light duty case. Even with its stronger webbed transaxle case, even the STI six speed isn't as bullet-proof as they would like you to believe!

Do yourself a favor and start with a stonger foundation to begin with. I spent over $9k on my wrx and ended-up demodding it, selling all the parts for half of the original cost, and luckily traded my car in before the bottom dropped-out on WRX's.

The EVO is a great starting point for a high hp road machine, that already has the right suspension, chassis, tires/wheels, brakes, and ergonomics right from the factory.

Heh,

This jumped out at me. We have my mostly stock (but not for long) EVO and my wife's WRX wagon with minimal mods. Just the ESP like steering in the EVO make it worth it, esp compared to the WRX. If I go from my car to the WRX, it's hard to turn the wheel enough to stay on the road.

Good luck,

The clutch may be a weak point in the EVO, but the tranny is head and shoulders above the WRX.

I just read an article comparing the FQ300 with the Prodrive STi in one of the european rags a couple of days ago. The Evo won, but they commented that although the new EVO six speed was nice, they preferred the time-tested and bullet-proof 5spd tranny in the VII. Made me feel a little bit better about getting cheated out of the six speed

In the end it truly is your decision, but its always good to get feedback from people that have actually owned both types of cars in both stock and tuned trim!

Good luck with your choice!

The 5 speed tranny in our EVO's is beefy, bulky, and bad ***...

Just ask how Al's tranny is holding up.. With making real close to 600hp, with just a new clutch.. I think the 5 speed is awesome... I'll take that over a 6 anyday... Same space with smaller gears make up the 6 speed, = weaker tranny...

[Unlike the Suzuki - it seems the evo drivetrain is rock solid - its holding up fine] Posted by Al Freidman in another thread
