AbusiveWombat what do you mean the Mitsu reliability unknown I thought Mitsubishi had a good reliability.
The Sti makes a bit more power earlier in the RPMs where the EVO doesn't start making power until about 2800-3000 rpms. It's a love hate thing. I love feeling that rush of power but when starting up a hill with AC the car can feel like a dog, unless you slip the clutch until the car is up to 2000 rpms. This turbo lag only effects 1st gear. Once cruising the EVO is quick to boost.

Let's face it. Mitsubishi is no Honda or Toyota. My past experience with Mitsubishi's have been soso. Never had any drivetrain problems but had little things go wrong. Example: fog light pop out of front air dam twice. Now I will say that the EVO has much better fit and finish than the past Eclipse I had experience with. Plus the EVO is built in Japan which I beleive has a higher level of build quality than the US. Also, after sitting in an STi, I beleive that the fit and finish of the EVO is comparable...I would not say that the STi is much better. The plastics and material is all on the same level.

Only time will tell how each of these cars hold up. Here's a good quote from someone on here:

cheap/fast/reliable - pick two.

Im sure(like others posted) if you went to subbie forums they would be way more biast towards the sti, but ya, both are great. My friend just got a black evo(god forbid black!!!) and took me for a spin, it was a wild ride. Also at work i was talking to a guy that has a brand spankin new blue sti in the parking lot, he loves it. basically you will be happy with whatever you get, if you arent worried about money issues, then THATS when you have to get in the debate about which is better. Personally i would get the EVO. Mitsu has had this in developing stage for a veeeeery long time and i like the feel/looks better. As far as the interior console goes, ya...sti has got a more FLASHY look to it.. but who needs an outside temp gauge and all that, the last thing you are worrying about is the look of the console when you are racing side by side with some little punk. No doubt they are both well oiled sexy beasts, and i would get both if i had the $$$, but for now i am really set on an evo. =) I think the so-called "probs" are about the same, they equal out eachother on the sti and evo. NO ones to say they wont get fixed in the future(if they really do exhist).

Also, when you say detonating.. do you mean like...tic....tic...tic... !!!!!BOOOOM!!!!?

And another question, when...and if the word is true about maybe the next year or so evo has a 6speed, do you think it will be THAAT much better than the 5speed? I mean.. thats alot of shifting there.. hehe. I just dont want to like buy a 5speed and find out a year later that they car is tons better with the 6speed. Thanx Guys.

1. Nope. Try getting a stick and lightly tapping a sheet of aluminum.

2. Just longer, less agressive gear shifting. Other than that, I don't really know. But I doubt Mistubishi would release a 6-speed so soon, and if so, the car itself would be a lot more expensive.

Cheers,
Robert Villarreal

Ya, but i would like the agressive shifting much better i think, and in traffic it would be even worse for a 6speed would it not? So the detination is just the engine knocking? What actual parts of the engine is involved in the detination.. cause i was hearing everyone say that eventually it destroys your engine..

Listen to This, autoworld magazine just released the "bulletproofness" of certain cars companys. (keep in mind that they incorperate every single model with in this poll)
Basically its based on an "every hundred cars, how many probs exhisted" factor

the best was lexus= out of every 100 cars an average of 76 probs were reported

Hummer got the worst= 225 probs per every 100 cars

mitsu got ranked 29 out of 36 with 148 probs per every 100 cars on average

and suburu got #27 with 146 probs per every 100 cars

REMMEMBER its everymodel...hehe... so not necesarrily the EVO and the STi(i am sure they werent part of this survey seeing that they JUST came out)
Source was by JD Power and associates 2003 initial quality study

A 6spd is not needed. Once you drive an EVO you'll realize that the power band is very broad and the gears are already very aggressive. The ratios for the EVO are more aggressive than most 6 spds. It might be nice to have a slightly more aggresive 5th and a better economy 6th but I really like sitting at peak torque on the highway.

Having driven both cars I have to say that I found that the Scooby was much more “laggy” than the Mitsu. The boost seems to come in somewhere around 5k. If you get caught napping a quick car will be by you before you can get back on boost. With the Evo the power is not as hard to find.

The interior finish and ride comfort on the STi however is dramatically better than Mitsubishis attempt.

If you intend to leave your car essentially stock consider the STi. If you plan to join the hunt for “MORE” go with the Evo.

Laggy?? i don't think so...i've been an STi owner for almost a month and its anything but laggy...even as low as 2000 rpm you're pushing about 200 lbs of torque....the Evo's boost kicks in at around 3500 rpm but nothing much below that range so when it does kick in, it feels much faster. the torque and power delivery on the STi has more of linear feel but by no means is it laggy.

I think b/c its power delivery is very linear that he doesn't feel

I don't even think he's talking about the US STi.

Try the USDM STi. I've been in an Evo as well and it has its strong points. But, compared to the STi, power isn't one of them! They are both great fun, however, and I can't see how you could go wrong with either.

Oh, and the STi ping issue is non-existant for most folks. Similar to the tranny and gear grinding complaints heard here--most people don't have a problem. I've tried a bunch of times to replicate it and I can't.

I love the Murcielago, I can't believe the Evo posted a better time. That's amazing.
