EVO is not limited, it's a production car, I believe they made more EVOs then the STi, 3000 STi for 2003.

I was in the sam boat tying to decide between the 2. For monthsw I was set on STi then slowly opened m mind and have had my evo for almost 2 weeks and couldn't be happier. My easonoing would ake too long to explain here but suffice it to say that if you want a handler you're best bet is evo. It'll be easier to bump output on evo to surpass STi than to improve handling on STi. Finally, take decent care of the care and the evo will last plenty long.

My STi does detonate with crappy CA 91 gas. I'm going to the dealership to reflash the ecu next week. I still miss the handling when I test drove the EVO.

point-a-b-c...is the Evo handling that much better????

I am going to test drive the Evo later this week, and the Sti hopefully on the weekend. I have yet to find an Sti to test drive though. Someone has offered to take me for a test ride in an Sti but that is not the same as a test drive.
If I end up liking both cars the same, it just might boil down to which car I can get the better deal on, and at this point it looks like the Evo, deal wise. I have called 3 mitsubishi dealers and everyone of them has at least 3 or more Evos on their lots. I called many Subaru dealers and none of them had any Sti's so I don't think it is possible to get the Sti for less than MSRP without waiting a long time.
I have heard horror stories from dealers in Southern California who are asking between $7000-$10,000 above MSRP. Thats criminal if you ask me. Luckily I am moving down to California this fall, but I am going to buy my car up here in the North and take it down to California so I don't get taken by the dealers down there.
Cheers

Yea Hobie but that would mean no more 300hp unless boost is raised to compensate.

The area that ping/det occured wasn't at the peak hp point, but before that. The reflash takes care of that area, so people may lose some hp numbers on paper at that area, but the peak hp would remain the same. It's not a a/f issue, it was a timing advance issue, so the reflash would mainly be pulling some timing in that area, not redoing a/f ratios.

As far as I can see, this was an easier problem to fix than a clutch and transmission.
Ok what did the HP go down to then? =)

I got my clutch and tranny fixed when I went from my WRX to the Evo. Remove the restrictor and put in a steel line seems to be the fix for the Evo - bout $70 in parts.

both car doesnt win in these catagory. TOYOTA and HONDA is.
Ick..now who the hell would want a Honda or a Toyota? Boring, gutless, soulless, FWD, commuter boxes. I don't think they were mentioned in the original question. H and T have a good resale because all the idiot Plebes drive them - they couldnt give a rats azz about performance it's only about driving from A to B. Those cars don't break because Plebes just do their little commute then get the hell out. If you want resale value try Porsche.

How many Subarus have you owned and for how long? It only took me about two years to figure out that Subaru does not know how to build quality interiors.....yeah I know a little slow but I was trying my best to be happy

As for Subaru mechanicals....umm, not too impressed with their tranny, engine was nice though (smooth and happy to rev, more so than the 4G63), but if the head is plagued with det problems, not the best IMO. Do Pent roof designs not work with boxers?

Hey, an STi driver. Can you share some feedback on your ride with us?

Wasnt the det around peak torque? If they reduced the timing in the trouble spot, then I would guess torque went down. Maybe the STi is now like 300hp with about 275lb/ft ? I wonder how much smaller the area under the curve is?

Okay guys,
I own an STi, I had the ping, it rarely happened, but it did. I got the reflash, no more ping, no loss in power or anything. If anything It felt a little more consistant in the power band. Absolutely love the car. Haven't had any other problems with the car at all. I added an exhaust which gave me 27hp just with the bolt on. Real easy to make fun power with this car.

Well, when STi pulls on straight, Evo takes the curve. What most magazine reviews are pretty accurate, so you can't go wrong with either car. My personal experience on the STi would be: I need coilovers!! I had Tein Flex on my WRX and it handled better than those stock STi suspension. Also stainless steel brake lines will be nice, too.

I went on a mountain run last weekend, I kept up with the sport bikes just fine. Wasn't even pushing the car hard. Both cars handle great. And I think the difference from driving both is nominal.
