Evo vs. STI | Anything and Everything [ALL THREADS MERGED]
My Evo runs in the "10-20 second" bracket. One of our Evo guys went to a big 200 car WRX/STi meet here in VA and said everyone was more interested in his Evo. It's a much more memorable car.
I'll see if I can talk my Mitsu dealer down to 27.9K. If I could get that price, it'll be a steal (w/ sunroof & big spoiler).
I'm starting to lean back towards the Evo as the maintenance schedule for the STI seems WAY more intensive. I think the oil in the Driver adjustable center differential needs to be changed every 15-20K. Seems like it'll be a more expensive car down the road to own. Plus, if I came home with a 30K car w/out a radio, my wife would make me sleep on the porch!

My friend. I would say go with the Evo. Its proven time and time again. I like the way the STI looks. I love the Dash board. People complain that the Evo has a harsh ride, but to me its ok. The only thing I hate about my EVO is that on the streets of NYC the roads are not as smooth. You need to have both hands on the steering wheel while going over road imperfections. Thats about it. My car is slightly modded and I have yet to be beaten. Oh yeah my freind beat me with another Evo. I raced another friend of mine with a regular Wrx with the basic bolt ons plus a cpu upgrade and I BEAT him. He went and slapped on a bigger turbo to beat me, than something not so good resulted. Oh yeah I also beat a slightly modded Sti also. That engine in the Sti is not proven. Its brand new, the 4g63 has been around for over a decade now. Just my two cents. If you get an Sti get it in White Its hot!!!

JD Powers rates Subaru quality as higher. Also, the STI engine is one of Wards 10 best. I have to laugh when I hear someone driving an EVO and saying that Subaru has transmission issues. Modding is great if you don't mind kissing your warranty goodbye.
That said, take the wing off the Evo and the styling is a little better than the STI. The hood scoop is flat out silly.

Hey Chike! Didn't know you were having a STi problem.
In any case, the STi 6-spd is bulletproof. It's not the same tranny in the WRX's. However, the new 2.5L engine is not bulletproof. I assume they used a 2.5L to get the 300hp they needed without failing emissions. However, the 2.5L block used here is a brand new worldwide engine, meaning it's not used in any other STi elsewhere in the world. I think there has been some negative speculation with regard to it's reliability, but if you're planning to stay stock, the engine should serve you well.
If you plan on doing anything (even something as basic as exhaust, boost control, etc) I would stick with the Evo. The market is vast, proven (carried over from the DSM market), and very reliable.
On the issue of the clutch - make it a priority (have your dealer install it, if even) to install the stainless steel clutch line. I just got it in this past weekend, and it has done wonders. The clutch feels "softer", and is not so much of an on/off switch like stock. However, you have a much better feel for the car, and you can actually slip the clutch when you want to (as opposed to it happening by accident). I assure you this will make your stock clutch last. I'm at 13K and no problems!
Suby's DCCD is kind of eh, IMO. I like the idea of having a controllable differential, but I can't imagine when I would need to play with it (and if I did, how many times?). The amount of maintenance for it is not really worth it, considering the gadget does nothing to make it handle better than the Evo.
Dash... well, it might be cheap, but it's solidly built. It doesn't fall apart or anything. I just don't like Suby's eggshell looking dash. I think it's fugly.
Your biggest concern should be service. I haven't heard of outstanding service from either, but I have had no problems with car yet (knock on wood). At some point, I mentioned that I was having a rather loud throw-out bearing rattle, and that my door/window was squeaking (which I told him to throw some WD-40 on). All fixed, and all good. This was the Sheehy Manassas btw. They've been really good to me. For the Cville Colonial Auto, I don't know. There aren't many Evo's here, so I don't think you'll be seeing a lot of warranty work if any at all. Almost 15K here, and yes I've had some rattles here and there, but nothing that would seriously make me regret buying the car. Treat her right, and she'll treat you right.
Last but not least, take a test drive. Seriously. If you want, come drive my car. When it comes to fun, Evo > STi. Haven't you seen the Top Gear videos?

Thanks Alex. Yeah, I'm getting a new Evo now. I'm going to make six figures in my job this year, so why buy someone else's problem?
I may just take you up on that offer about driving your car. I'm working with Sheehy and they're being really nice.
Thanks!

Bless those top gear videos, they set me straight. And like said before, you can't look at paper and numbers; it's about the drive. I havn't driven or been in either, but just from vids, it's obviously appearent which car is more fun and better suited for a true driver. Evo will always best the STi in my eyes. Cheers
Invoice is $26,891
The MSRP is $28,987, without sunroof, without wing.
So I guess, sunroof is at least $700, wing I think is close to $1000.
$28,800-$1700 = $27100. So it is only $200 over invoice. You got yourself a good deal, but why settle for less? See if you can get more.
Dont' tell him I told you, but while we were there my father was not happy with the price and he railed the guy, then took some more bonuses from the service dept - I think I ended up getting maybe $100-200 off the pitpass in addition to the stuff we were able to get off of MSRP.
