those pictures are misleading, the in line or I engines have counterweights in the crankshaft that there is no movement in the horizontal plane as the picture tries to project, the same thing with the V engines. The flat motor mislead everybody by looking at the horizontal plane but if you look at the vertical plane, there should be some movement. the flat motor doesn't have a straight crankshaft! the only advantage i see is the low center of gravity, that's it.

BoxerSTI,

Why ????? For what are your reason being on this board ? We all know you like Subaru's better then , There are pro's and negatives for both, So stop beating the dead horse !! Its fine to talk about the differents of both cars, But to say one of the two cars is totally deficient is plain foolish both cars are very good. Both cars have benefited from each other. I'm just happy that we are going to have both cars here in the U.S.A. Its all Good !!!

BoxerSTi has as much a right to be here as anyone else so long as he follows the rules...which he's done. He has brought up some valid points. What's wrong with a little argument/discussion? I'm a sucker for a nice boxer engine. Once I pay off the Lancer I think I'm picking up an older 2.5RS.

Look at this and you can see only Flat layout's engine will creat equal weight from left and right cylinders at the same time WHICH with cancel each other so there is no vibration.

http://www.subaru-global.com/about/awd/1200.html

Quote from Subaru.co.jp

Because the opposed pistons mutually counteract vibration and give superior balance. This results in smoother engine performance throughout all speed ranges - with no need for a balancer shaft - as well as giving unparalleled response to the driver.
The next advantages are the size and weight. Obviously, the Horizontally-Opposed piston layout means an engine that is both shorter and lower than a conventional in-line design. In addition, you have a more compact shape, lighter weight and the ability to mount the engine much lower in the chassis. The overall result is a low centre of gravity and balance that cannot be matched with other engine types.

Yeah, I'm still gonna argue that l4's are really well known for their good harmonics esp when turbocharged or in the high revs, but I give the Subaru boxer credit where credit is due.

I do have to say though that a more neutral source (as opposed to directly from Subaru who has a boxer engine in almost every car and therefore a reason to praise them to no end) would probably benefit your cause a bit more. I'm sure there's still plenty of backing info.

Hey, did you all play their "game" on steering and handling. I think that its extremely exaggerated... the RWD car, even though its going slow, acts as though it always swerves. I don't think the rear tires turn do they?

Are those WRX or STi? Because STi has closed block design which hold alot more HP. By the way, does EVO have closed block design? I think it does but does anybody have a pic of the engine block?

Why do manufacturers leave out a real boost guage? Does it cost that much to put on in instead of a voltmeter or a dummy guage that tells you that you are driving a Lancer? Curious!

Yea, the US Evo8 is quite a joke.
As you put it, a bloated pig and even longer than before.
Although i think the extra 8 cm comes from the bigger bumpers.
Man, the Evo8 is actually 400 lbs more than the Evo6!!
A bit ridiculous.

The WRX is looking more and more intriguing. Much lesser weight, $6k cheaper at least and not that much power difference. 50hp is so easy to make up for with a turbo engine.

It should beat a stock WRX, but look for a facelifted WRX with 250HP this summer. It should weight around 3085lbs like last year's model.

The weight of the Evo 7 with fluids loaded is nearly the same as the Evo 8's weight. If you removed your spare tire from the car, and installed lighter wheels and a lighter flywheel, you would already lose a good bit of weight, and most of that weight loss would be unsprung. The Evo 8 is going to romp on a stock WRX. It has significantly higher torque numbers and an additional 44 HP. The Evo 8 is still going to compete with the STi. This car is not here to fight the stock WRX.

Here we are posting in the forum for one of the fastest and most moddable cars in the world. One that can be boosted to 300+ bhp and much less unspring weight for less than $5000.

I am sure this car is going to dominate.
