Keep in mind that this isn't purely Mitsu....its a Dodge thing as well. The Caliber looks like its gonna be out near the end of this year.....I would guess that the EVO ten will be out around the same time.
As for the change up of the nine. The EVO nine isn't all that different than the eight. a front bumper and mivec. Mivec has been around on other platforms for years.
I wouldn't think the 10 would be a one year run but I would be nervous about buying a car that has been completely redesigned and in its first year of production.
I am very happy with my 03. The only remaining mod I plan on doing its a FLSD.
I think most of the people interested in the TEN are probably the "must have the newest version" folks. If you dont own an evo now and are waiting for the ten that is just silly. You could pick up a used 03 for 20k and enjoy that for 2-3 years. Even if you traded it in on an EVO10 you would't lose much money at all. Buying NEW is silly if you ask me. Especially on cars with 10year/100000mile warranties.

Axel - Precisely, I can't imagine interests shared by GS Holdings AND various Mitsu subsidiaries is intended to be a risk, dabbling in a performance market that a single, somewhat neglected car in their lineup satisfies (especially when it appears their target market has turned for, IMHO, the worse).
Furthermore, you have proven to be a wealth of knowledge, thanks for sharing so much of it with all of us. I'm new to the forum but plan to be here a while and I would like nothing more than to have a post in a few years along the lines of "I thought my 8MR was prime performance, little do I know what the X or XI would bring!"
Cheers

If the DCX Smart series is discontinued, Mitsu stands to make a lot of money due to contracts that run through 2010
Zetsche, who became CEO on Jan. 1, says he hasn't given up on Smart. But with cumulative losses at the unit now topping $3 billion since 1998, DaimlerChrysler's boss is clearly weighing all options.
The plan also calls for Smart to shed nearly one-third of its 2,300 employees by integrating its design, purchasing, and after-sales service with Mercedes. In another cost-saving move, the engine for the next generation Fortwo model will be supplied by DaimlerChrysler partner Mitsubishi.
One thorny problem is Smart's unsuccessful four-seat model, "Forfour," which is built jointly at Mitsubishi's NedCar plant in Holland. Smart sold only 40,000 Forfours in 2004, the year it was launched. The target for 2005 was 150,000 cars, but only 38,000 cars were produced by the end of August, a dismal performance. (A Smart official declined to break out sales by model.)
"The Forfour is a walking disaster," says Cheetham, who argues the car offers nothing unique and should be discontinued. Meanwhile, sales of the Fortwo have hovered at around half the initial 200,000 a year target, analysts say. Last year, Smart sold a combined 143,000 cars, a slight 2.4% increase over 2004. By contrast, sales of BMW's iconic Mini topped 200,000 in 2005.
Shutting down the entire Smart unit could be the worst of all possible options, though. Analysts estimate that the cost of terminating Smart could run as high as $4.8 billion, partly because of production guarantees made to suppliers and Daimler partner Mitsubishi Motors, which run through 2010. Taking all of this into account, many analysts say Mercedes may have to tow Smart a while longer before it can find someone to take on the burden

Then to say the X is an experiment and it will change 1 yr later.
I don't mean to be a dream crusher, just a realist. Japan will be producing some serious cars in the 60-80k price range over the next few years, those companies have increasing market share and have incredible reputations on their side (Nissan, Honda, Toyota). Mitsubishi is that company that lied about TSBs for 13 years... Mitsu is that company that company that keeps pushing that new pickup and appears to have shifted focus... Mitsu is that company that doesn't appear too favorable to those of us that modify our cars in some way then bring our cars in for warranty repairs for a completely unrelated reason and are forced to engage in war.
