I find that unlikely. For whatever reason, I'll dream up two possibilities why:

1. Mitsubishi would never let Dodge (DCX) bastardize the Evo by offering a cheaper variant that would cannibilize sales from it. Its probably why the Caliber was AWD then FWD, the AWD, and now finally FWD seemingly at the last minute. Even though the Caliber is a tall box, it would still be 2/3rds or 7/10ths Evo and that's just too close for comfort.

and/or

2. Dodge would not want to sell a vehicle that has the potential to embarass the upcoming Challenger or perhaps even the Viper in stock or modded form. This is rumored to be the reason for the Stealth demise because a lightly modded one was more potent then the first Vipers.

Fine your buying a IX just dont bring those kinds of responses (ricer-tech)here. Most of us have a wing the size of a kitchen table but we try to bring a level of maturity and mature responses to this forum. I highly doubt most of us want to be associated with the preconceptions cops and otheres have of us. We have enough issues with insurance rates rising because of people who think there evo makes them better drivers and crashing.

P.S. the X will be great, different, but great.

That made me think a bit, and I did a search. Every pic I found had intake in the back, and turbo in the front. Galant VR4 is the same way. Only different mount I found were the Starion guys who swapped in 4G's into their cars. Those looked sick.

SWOLN,

The first pix of the a "World Engine" will most likely be that of the Caliber SRT4 2.4l. Those will be the first vehicles with that motor family in turbo form. Hopefully, the SRT4 guys will push the envelope enough for us to see where the weaknesses will be...at least from a block standpoint.

Guys I want to tell you something that I talked with some reps from Mitsubishi and I mean really high up there. I use to sell cars for Toyota, Volvo...etc.

I really believe that Mitsubishi will blow people away. The new engine will be superb. The way the Evo X will be insisde will be so much more improved and not only the interior but the exterior. The suspension will be great, the ride will be comfortabile and the handling will be even better. A real plus if the turbo will be towrads the firewall it will be awesome and why? There will be more room for turbo, better cooling and shorter downpipe. Many many reasons why I believe that Evo X will be great. Mitsubishi will always keep the Evo as their flagship car. The Eclipse and all their other cars are replaceble but the Evo is the only car they make in few numbers a year. Something like 4k of them.

Sorry for the long writing but I really think Evo will become one of the greatest and cheapest Exotic car ever and it will revolutionase the industry.

GO GO

It's totally possible that the new engine could be miles better than the 4G63 and I would love to see people experiment with it. But the fact is, I don't like being a guinea pig, especially with a $30k car. When I get back into the US next year, if they aren't selling new IX's anymore I'll pick up a slightly used IX or VIII. I'm sure that the engine will come through and turn out to be a great foundation for modding, but I would rather avoid the whole teething stages. I'll be perfectly happy using the last production 4G63 which has been perfected over so many years. Maybe after a few years I'll trade for an EVO X, but for now I'll just sit back and enjoy watching you guys have fun with the X

Yes, you are correct. I have a picture of the World Engine that is the 2.4 liter, but I can't seem to get it to load. So, the next best thing is to go to this page and look.
