Lancer Evolution X News, Info, Pics, etc... | [ALL THREADS MERGED]
Ahhhh, it's so refreshing to read a post by a member that actually did some research and knows his stuff. Aluminum engines are not as bas as everyone is making them to be. Hell, if Ferrari, BMW, Mercedes (all high-end companies where money/pricing of vehicle is no object) have been using aluminum engines for a while now (they also switched from iron blocks). Of course if the engine is badly designed from the get-go, it won't be able to handle much boost whether it's iron or aluminum. It's all about good engineering. And to add to your comment, Aluminum absorbs heat a lot better than iron, meaning the engine won't get as hot as it's iron counterpart.
If a metal can conduct (transfer) heat at great speed, then it will also lose heat at great speed. Aluminum conducts heat at 3 times the speed as Iron.
However conduction is different from thermal mass, which is any mass that absorbs and holds heat.
Because of iron's lower conductivity but higher density, it's thermal mass is much greater than aluminum.
Combine the two for aluminum and you get = superior conduction, and less heat retention.
Use common sense. Which one would you touch after an hour? A sheet of aluminum ot a sheet of iron after baking in your oven at 450F.
For automotive applications, aluminum is superior to iron. The BS needs to STOP.
You got that part right although over 10 years old is an understatement, it's more like almost 25 year old design (first 4G63 applications came out in early 1984 if I am not mistaking; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubi...us_engine#4G63 ). SO I think it has served us good for all these years but time has come for new and improved technologies. Afterall, thats what EVOLUTION is all about.
Sport Compact Car "review" of Evo X
I picked up the April issue of SCC at my local store yesterday, drawn in by the front view of an EVO X, and the caption "The next EVO, we drive it first"
I dont know how many of you read a magazine in the store before ya buy it, or not buy it.
I was in a hurry, bought this issue, ( $4.99 plus tax), and waited until I could get home and read it in peace in the only room in the house in which man can be left alone. ( Yeah, the Bathroom)
With great anticipation, (and a chubbie), I skipped the first 53 pages, only to discover the article was based on a few pics, ( purdy ones at that), and a test drive at a blinding 20 MPH.
Flacciddity immediately set in.
The reveiwer talks about the ridgidity of the new chassis, and all the driver aids, blah blah ,blah.
Theres at least a hunnert jokes in the phrase, "Driver aids"
(Hmmm.. a new thread?)
Now I understand buisness, and the need to sell magazines, but....................
Thats like HUSTLER putting Halle Berry on the cover, and pics of Hilary Rodham Clinton inside.
Dang!
Anyway, from the info that the reviewer had to say about the car is pretty interesting. Lotsa compooters and such.
It sounds like Mitsubishi is going soft on the EVO, trying to attract more buyers, to a more civilized automobile.
Which is no crime mind you they're in buisness to make cars that sell.
With all the "whiz-bang", gadgetry on the new car, just makes me glad I bought the last model year true EVO.
With a MANUAL transmission.
So c'mon guys at SCC.. the cover should have said:
(We never get out of first gear) Test drive the EVO X!
IX forever!
