That may be true, but this is a turbo charged engine, and it takes RPMs to get the turbo spooled up. Don't expect the engine to pack a punch in 6th gear, unless you are pretty high in the RPM range. I had a 6 speed in my RSX-S, and I actually found that in many cases it was kind of a hindrance. As an example on the freeway in order to generate power for acceleration I would have to shift down from 6th to 4th or 3rd. Even with the phenomenal transmission in the RSX, it was sometimes prone to miss-shifting. Also consider that it takes you about a 1/2 second for each shift, so you may get quicker initial acceleration from a 5 speed than a 6. About the only thing the 6 speed in nice for is fuel economy, and reducing engine noise at freeway cruising speeds. All I can say is that I had a 6 speed in my RSX, and I don’t miss it at all in my EVO. I think I would have to drive both the EVO 5 and 6 speed side by side and compare to see which I actually liked better. My point is just don’t assume the 6 speed is better on the EVO by default without a real comparison. Perhaps in the MR the engine changes will be better suited to the 6 speed, but I think it’s too early to tell.

If you really care about the gear ratio of the 6 speed tranny compared to the 5 speed, then go to a good tranny shop and they will do the gearing for you. Like Chode said it is mainly for economy.

Chode you just made me remember the video of a guy who mis shifted his RSX from 3 into 2 and from what it looked like he hit nearly 13 K RPMS (guesstimating how far the tach needle went past 9K) !!!!. Funny name you've got there .

Transmission 6M/T 5M/T
Gear ratio
1st 2.909 2.785
2nd 1.944 1.950
3rd 1.434 1.444
4th 1.100 1.096
5th 0.868 0.825
6th 0.693 ---
reverse 2.707 3.416
Final gear ratio 4.583 4.529

Now if you transmission geeks want to argue about which gearset is best at least you can reference actual ratios. For me, I'll take the 6spd...taller first for better off-the-line acceleration then shorter 2nd and 3rd since you'll already be in the meaty part of the torque curve. 4th is basically the same. 5th is quite a bit taller and obviously 6th is for cruising.

Exclamation

Here is with the overall ratios for those who are interested.

Oh and all of the first 5 gears are effectively shorter for better overall accelleration.

1st 13.331947 12.613265
2nd 8.909352 8.83155
3rd 6.572022 6.539876
4th 5.0413 4.963784
5th 3.978044 3.736425
6th 3.176019
reverse 12.406181 15.471064

The best part of this is that you can MUCH faster in reverse with the 6 speed setup! WOOT WOOT!

Just a tad bit of info for those who havent seen the dvd. Not that the little difference in speed is all that great, but in BMI "evo strikes back" they compare an evo 8 rs with the standard 5 speed and the 8 rs with the six speed. The six speed was slightly quicker in the 1/4 mile. Also lapped better times by a smal margin around the track.

so is it solid that this car is coming? nobody's really been discussing it lately and I haven't seen any news about it. is it still up for debate or is there "solid" evidence now?

There is no such thing as 'solid' evidence here (except for the photos provided). If you consider why this thread started, there is a VERY GOOD chance that it will get here. Anything that is said here should be 'averaged out' in your mind and you should form your own ideas. Why even bother considering it as being 'here' until a member actually has one in his/her possesion?

This drastically reinforces the reports in several magazines that the MR is coming here. The fact that it doesn't have all of the exterior "show" pieces of the MR means nothing, as that has no bearing on the drivability of the vehicle. They will need to complete a full testing cycle for emissions, safety, etc., long before the first production model ever reaches our shores. Keeping that in mind, I would say that this discovery does not mean that the MR is going to be arriving at the dealerships any sooner than the initial reports. The probably took one of their existing pre production EVO VIIIs and dropped in the MR spec upgrades. It makes complete sense from an engineering standpoint to do this. Why spend tons of money building expensive pre-production prototype cars, when you can save a bundle using an existing vehicle to build it. They can use this car as a baseline, and then make any tweaks necessary before the final production models are built. Keep in mind that the fact that this particular car is black does not mean that it will come in that color as a production car. What I would suggest is to try and make contact with someone at the facility. Tell them you are really interested to know about the car. If they don't want to talk to you then go to one of the car magazines show them the pictures, they probably have contacts on the inside. In fact the magazines probably know about the car already. The magazines are actually published months after the articles are actually written.

You say it's an VIII modified to MR specs? How do you explain the aluminum roof that's on the car? I seriously doubt they did a roof swap. You talk like you know what the whole deal is and how they operate, but in fact, you don't. I'm not disputing the fact that it's an engineering test mule, because obviously, it is. You're just spreading misinformation based on your speculations and assumptions of how you "think" the industry works. The only people who know the real deal about that car are the Mitsu engineers that working on the program.
