Yo fellas, I just went to the Barnes and Nobles and I saw a Road and Track (Spring 2004) issue with a red Evo MR tested. In Japan of course. It has SPEED writen across the front of the mag

It also mentioned that quote " after peicing together bits of conversion, I came away with one conclusion: This baby is definitely heading our way"

It sent shivers down my spine. Is Road and Track a reliable source? Because if they are then our prayers have been answered.

Just some specs from the article

0-60: 4.3 secs
1/4: 12.9 @107.6mph
slalom:70.8mph w/mild understeer
200ft.skidpad: .98g w/mild understeer.

Oh MR the way you make me feel. I suggest every MR fan go and get that mag ASAP

Something Wicked This Way Cometh

That's right, it is basically official... the Evo MR is coming .

As mentioned by Darkchild, SPEED, ROAD and TRACK's new sport-compact spin-off, Sam Mitani, writer for R and D and editor of SPEED, was invited by to there proving grounds in Japan... besides writing that the car was bascially sex on wheels and also said...

that the Evo MR is coming June '05, likely renamed the Evo Ralliart Edition.

Importantly, this was information given to him by Mitsubishi's Chief Evo engineer, Hiroshi Fujii.

It will have a larger turbo, new wastegate, with increased torque to 295 lb-ft and whp of 285... as well as all the other known changes.

Cost in Japan will be $32,000 with the U.S. price likely to be $33,000 with the light-weight BBS wheels.

So yes there is a G-d, and yes, loves us in the U.S., and is finally willing to show it .

... oh and for all y'all pining that the Evo is a bust with a limited shelf-life... if you look at all the sales records and from MITSU's own mouth, it's keeping them afloat... probably why they're bringing the MR... plus it's the basis of their new WRC car. So two birds with one stone.

Oh yeah, ROAD and Track is as reliable as you can get... car companies let them know when they're ready to let the word out.

Amen...

Wow guys, let's not jump the gun yet. Nothing has been finalized. All your questions will be answered when Mitsubishi has a press release (if and when).

If it won't be sold until June '05, it might as well be the Evo IX.

Maybe sooner...

Looking over the SPEED article again, I think I may have ASSumed '05 ...

I think y'all are right and that it's more likely going to be an '04 and likely released this summer... which makes a little more sense since it's being released in Japan and Europe this summer, and it'll be released just in time to counter the WRX STi pseudo-Type C coming to our shores.

So long live , long live its reign over Subaru, and G-d bless ... with liberty, justice and Evo MRs for all .

hello earth

I agree a better version of evo is coming to compete with sti but i highly doubt it will be anything like the jdm mr. We always get shortchanged - so forget AYC, 6mt, aluminum root etc. I'm betting the only change will done is to the engine - the bigger turbo, wastegate. In all the magazine comparisons between evo and sti that I read, sti engine was generally thought to be superior to that of evo - in terms of power, responsiveness, etc.
So if mitsu in in the business of competing with STI they will focus on the relative weak spot. Why would even touch the suspension if it's already the best there is?
Most of these comparisons in overall place evo ahead of sti anyway, so there doesn't seem to big incentive to reinvent the evo - even if we get the spec-c which is highly doubtful.

A little more info...

So the it seems, again based on that SPEED article, that the MR will have:

1. 6sp
2. ACD
3. Aluminum roof
4. Bilstein shocks
5. Lightweight 17-in BBS alloys
6. the VORTEX generator... for Aerodynamic benefit and 'her' pleasure
7. Engine upgrades resulting in an increase in torque to 295 lb-ft @ 3500rpm and 280-285 bhp @ 6500rpm
8. ? interior upgrades - Looks like carbon-fiber, and seude Recaros
9. Blacked out headlights/tail-lights
10. All carbon-fiber wing, i.e. no paint

.... but no word on ayc.

And I really think the MR is coming... because MITSU needs to beat the STi, not just be as good... so they need to stay one step ahead... no catching up. And they're making it, it passes U.S. regulations, so why not bring it, especially if its only $4k more... for us, and maybe $500 for MITSU. Sounds like a win-win situation to me .

Hope this helps,
g

performance gains aside, if the MR was how they made regular Evo 8's, looks-wise, and then they came out with an all black, red, blue, or silver Evo MR (whereas the new color wasn't previously available) everyone would be crooning about how badass the new color, non-CF interior, and blue interwoven recaro's were. I think people are letting the hype go to their heads.

Oh yeah, the wheels... Those BBS' are probably lighter but I think the Enkei's look better.

The MR should have some pimp**** 7 spoke wheels - maybe powdercoated or anodized with a polished lip, a less-dressed interior (they got the seats right), and that stupid thing on the roof needs to get canned and the money spent on titanium exhaust that has a servo-powered (& user-switched) flap for "quiet" or "horsepower" mode (they already have a spring-loaded flap in the stock muffler, so the idea is on their minds).

im not big on the all CF wing either. this sucks. i want to like the MR (dont get me wrong, the perf. stuff alone would have me buy one if i could) but i honestly think it's uglier than a regular Evo (again, except for those seats).

Turbocake, not to start a war but how could the GSR look better than the MR and vice versa. It's the same car on the outside except for the new vortex generator which is optional (which I admit was weird at first but I took a long look at it and it grew on me) " anything which adds to the performance is a plus in my book and the very much appreciated removal of the hideous Alteeza style tails. And the wheels are usually gone in favor of Volks anyway.

Sounds to me like you're trying to defend your purchase It's ok though. But you know what they say: Good things come to those who wait. So for all of us who sacrificed the priviledge of being a "first batch evo owner" and it was hard not to go purchase the car, I think the aluminum roof which saves weight and lowers the cars center of gravity, the bigger and improved turbo which adds more vroom, the Bilstein shocks, the revised ACD/SAYC for even better handling and the 6spd tranny was well worth the wait.

While you wait, I'll be driving my Evo

Again, I'd wait for a press release before getting my panties in a bunch...
