Yet another thread about Turboing a 03 lancer.
Sadly, both ways are just bad. Piggyback welding the flange is actually the better of the two. If you cut of the 4G63 flange and weld on the 4G94 flange, you have to pull the outer runners in to match up. This puts added strain on the existing welds and leads to inevitable cracking/breaking. Welding the 4G94 flange right onto the 4G63 flange does create issues as well (added welds, added strain to exhaust studs, turbo located even closer to radiator), but as I said it's technically the lesser of two evils. People don't want to pay up for a quality manifold so this is the result.
It creates a bad situation. My 16G6 manifold broke open like a fortune cookie right on the top of the collector due to the stress the re-welded flange puts on the original manifold welds.

Well there are 2 ways to install the new Headstuds, right right way and the wrong way. The right way would be to pull off the head, clean it up and try to make sure no oil gets into the stud holes, and hand tighten all of the studs in, put on the new HG, and place the head back on... then there is a certain order to tighten all the bolts onto the studs, at a torque of like 15-18.. my studs came with no instructions, this is what i have gathered from the Evo forums for installing headstuds.
The other (wrong way), alot of people do this way actually, doesn't mean its right, but they take out the stock studs and replace them, tighten them down one by one. the head is never removed. but its really easy to drip oil into the holes this way, and its a B to try to get it out.
So now that i got my manifold welded, i need oil lines, a new UEGO sensor, a new HG.... and a tactrix cable. I have a new job i am starting next monday, so ill have enough money to get it up and going again real quick!

And i guess when you are taking 1 stud out at a time to replace it, there is a chance that oil can get in between where the hg is, and mess it all up. Like i said b4, there are alot of ppl that do it that way, some shops even. idk if i would even risk it tho.
Any other thoughts?

Well basically I mean I have plenty of tools and I can suck every drop of oil out of the head before pulling the old bolts. I have done lots of head gaskets and head rebuild jobs but I just hate spending all that time cleaning all the old gasket material off the surface of the block and head and would rather not if the oil is the only issue with this but if there are other issues to worry about someone please dont hesitate to tell me. I have never pulled head bolts out without pulling the head just because its always due to needing to change the head gasket
So never looked into any issues that could arise from just pulling bolt to install the studs. I am also have trouble finding a metal head gasket, would a stock felpro be fine with the arp head studs? Also I wouldnt pull one out at a time I would pull all at once then put the studs all in at once torquing them to spec in the pattern from the fsm

True with the MLS just wasnt wure if there was a special metal one you can use. So I might as well bite the bullet and pull it off, crap I hate doing it but would hate more ***ing up my engine cause I took the short route. should be getting my Timing belt water pump head gasket and stud here pretty soon and I will put those all in before the build, I am also going to port the intake manifold while I am in there since I have to pull that off any way
