ok, so the evo rom things definately dont work, when I click any of them it gives me an error except for the 2006 evo IX. But after that finishes loading it says I'm done with my car and can turn the car off. But then I still cant do anything. Any ideas?
You should be able to download the data from the ECU... oh, and you shouldn't have to turn on the car. Just put it in ACC mode and it'll download. As for the rom reading, you're gonna have to get someone to edit an existing Definition file to read your ROM Correctly.
I had the same situation and someone on this thread helped me out in defining it. I used the wrong definition and my fields and data were all over the place. Didn't look right. When I got a definition file edited for my ROM everything just fell properly into place and it was a bit more legible.

i dont turn it on on, just to where all the gauge cluster lights come one, one click after the radio before the car starts up. I might be doing this wrong. I get in, plug the plugs in, plug it to my laptop, then click the key on. Then I open ECUFlash and click the little computer chip button up top that says read ECU from car or something, then it brings up the list of cars. The only one I got to not give me an error was the evo IX but it still didnt bring up my ecu stuff.

lol i bet. when i get home I'll get my steps on screen shots maybe. How come in the ecuflash for beginners written by the evo guy, he has a shot of looking on his desktop and his rom showing up there? Wouldn't ours do the same?
NO...
In order to even see the information the ROM has to be already Defined.
That screen shot looks as if he's already able to read it and he's saving a copy of it to somewhere for future reference.

So while I wait for this "Easy ROM reading for dummies", is there a specific order in which to connect the car to the computer? like: turn key>connect cable to laptop>connect cable to car? or is it just as long as the car is in on possition and is connected to the laptop?

You can click this link for an HTML version of the How-To, or you can use the one below
http://www.itd.umich.edu/~zgeorge/Ph..._tutorial.html
Enjoy and let me know if you still need anything clarified.
How To Connect ECUFlash to Your Lancer
A Guide By Z_Lancer_Man
Step 1 - Connect the cable; start ECUFlash
Make sure that in the bottom right corner you see that it has found the 1.3 Open Cable

Step 2 - Click the "Download ROM" button

Step 3 - Choose the following option

Step 4 - Turn the car to the "On" position and click OK

Step 5 - After the ROM is read, click OK

Step 6 - Click the last radio button

Step 7 - Choose your respective car model
NOTE: If you do not see your model on there or you try the definition file listed and it doesn't properly translate your ROM, then a def file must be made for you. Please contact me and I can hook you up.

Step 8 - Please note what your ECU identifier is; this helps with making new definition files; click "NEXT"

Step 9 - This lists all your car model info; click finish to see your ROM!

After you've done this and can properly see your ROM, you won't have to go through all these steps again. You'll be able to just connect the cable and read your ROM.

ok well i got to step 4, but while reading my rom it gve me this error:
[22:13:50.708] rkrv: preamble 1 error
If it makes a difference, i got through all of those steps before once but i didn't put in an identifier cause I didn't know what it was. So now it still wont read my ecu.

I've never heard of that error before. You don't have to enter the ECU identifier in. The software tells you what it is after you choose the definition file. For more support, you should check out the openecu.org forums and see if there is anything about that error message. You can also try a clean re-install. Uninstall everything and reinstall it and then try these steps and see what happens.
