heat sheild

maybe this would be good instead of making one. it says it fits from 2.5" inlet up to 4" inlet.

Hmm... very interesting. Maybe im just being stupid and all but, would it be a lil cooler if you paint the heatshield itself with those hight temperature paint? or doesnt really matter? also cosworth, the heatshied you got is the exact item that you linked on ebay? just wondering coz im really interested in getting one

Paint should help. I plan on doing that if I get a shield.

I would think paint anything other than black would help.

My buddy has the exact one linked on ebay and I made mine to copy his exactly. Mine isn't as nice though because I suck with tin snips

I think a carbon fiber heat sheild would be the way to go, Metal still retains to much heat to really be effective at doing its name sake purpose.

Of course CF costs an arm and a leg, other plastics may be the optimal way to go

It looks like it would some what restrict the air intake of the filter tho?!?!?!?! I am not sure but it looks like it could use a little bigger gap around the filter but, It could work great. If anyone tries it out post up some results.

It is this on ebay

I emailed my buddy about making a few, but I have the feeling he will say no just because we are only really into doing it with people or with our cars. Not mass production and selling them.

I THINK it helps, I cant really tell you how much the filter was exposed to heat before, but after, the heat shield barely warms up and the filter feels cool on my hand. Also anyone with an intake knows what I mean, when I say my car has a name. Chewi! I'll see if I can get a audio clip of it. Def feel the difference in there though

No, it can still suck in air from 360* (the shield isn't blocking airflow, just heat)
It's just making the cooler air from the stock inlet a priority (since that air is easier to suck in).

Color only matters in direct sunlight where you are correct, black would be the worst color and white would be the best...Im not gonna get into science here

But since it is under the hood, you wont have sunlight issues and in terms of the shield building up heat it will depend on the type of material used.

yeah good call never thought of that,

but then that would mean that painting it would be WORSE because I would think bare tin would be able to wick heat away faster than painted tin

Radiation does not only occur with the sun. However, it is not really the issue here. The heat shield...like blacksheep said...is acting as a baffle to restrict airflow from around the exhaust manifold and into the intake.

I just looked at the pic of the heat shield....and I would say that it looks ok, but could still be a little restrictive. It would probably be better to create a 3 sided box, or a simple L the closed out the area facing the manifold, but still left plenty of room to not impede airflow.

DUDE YOUR NOT READING ANY OF THE POSTS ABOVE. I HAVE SAID ABOUT 400 TIMES THAT IS THE FILTER I COPIED TO A 'T'. I just didnt want to wait for it to come in the mail i wanted it then!

I even linked it a couple pages back and brought it up again.

I can see the worry about restricting the filter, but you have to remember there is also the top of the filter to breath through that isn't blocked. And there is probably 3/4 to 1 inch of room all around. I noticed an increase in performance by adding this, but not sure if that is the placebo effect.
