First-ever optional winter tire and wheel package makes the 2016 Ford Focus RS the ultimate snow fun machine
Any savvy driver knows that you should never brave a snowy winter with anything less than winter tires. Whether you consider yourself a snow driving expert or not, tires are your car's shoes, and proper footwear is important in inclement weather.
But what happens when you fit snow tires to a 350-horsepower, all-wheel-drive, rally-born Ford hatchback?
Fun. Lots of fun happens.
Ford's rip-roaring Focus RS super hatchback is officially the first production car in North America to offer an optional winter tire and wheel package straight from the factory, and while that may not sound like Earth-shattering news, we can't help but picture slidey, snowy hoonage in our collective car-crazy minds.
For just $1,995 over the base price of $35,730, you can have a set of Michelin Pilot Alpin A4s mounted on 18-inch wheels that look just like the standard RS rims. That doesn't sound like much of a compromise to us.
These wheels and rubber were put to the test in the harsh winters in Northern Michigan and Sweden, so you bet your butt they can handle 3 inches in Brooklyn - or 1 in Atlanta, for that matter. The wheel and tire are both narrower to provide better traction in deep snow, and chains can even be fitted if the going gets really rough (and if your state allows it, of course).
Ford's latest addition to their performance stable has already been highly praised, and the torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system gives the car a performance edge over its front-wheel-drive counterparts... and over the likes of Volkswagen's Golf R and Subaru's WRX STi, too.
With a 2.3-liter Ecoboost 4-cylinder that pushes out 350-horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque, it's hard to argue that Ford's blue menace is anything but at the top of the heap. Only a head-to-head-to-head test will tell, though... are you listening Ford, VW and Subie??
If you're in the market for a Focus RS and live anywhere that sees snow, give yourself the gift of "snownuts" and shell out the extra $2,000. You'll be glad yo
I'm curious is that snow tire/wheel package is instead of or in addition to the standard wheels... if its instead of its a rip off in my book, in addition to its a decent deal if you really want oem looking 18's

OEM snow tire package/options are typically an additional set of wheels/tires. And per the ford build/price configurator, they are delivered as an additional set.

4 18" PA4s are about $900, plus wheels, M&B... $2k does seem pretty reasonable.
