Cars have AWD, so the front/rear axles have some kind of center differential between them, so the disengaging one of the axles is not necessary because the front and rear axles can turn at different speeds.
Trucks had full time 4WD (AWD) back in the 70's. I had a 78 bronco with full time and select-able center locking diff. It did not have 2WD though (unless you added locking front hubs and locked center diff). See pattern on left in this pic.

I always forget about the np203 tcase...lol. But, case in point, it has a center diff, so it did not have a 2wd drive option on the stick.

thats mechanical control. I was talking electronic control over the system, aka, button in the cabin capability. that being said I don't know if the GT-R was the first to have that much electronic control over the AWD system, but it was certainly one of the early adopters

Wasn't the first AWD that 4W electric hub Porsche. Wonder if he had a switch to shut any of the motors down?

Big dog GKN drivetrain bro talks Focus RS AWD.

Get it straight from the source. He even corrects a misconception about the Haldex. He plays a little what-if on what he would rather. Basically, within the limitations, GKN bro prefers electronic control (clutch packs) because you can make the car drive exactly as you want.

btw, look at the Audi Magna system. The decoupling unit has a dog engagement so I guess once it locks (the rear axle active) the clutches aren't the weak link?

I sat in one over the weekend at a ford dealer in Phoenix. Very nice on the inside, except the leather steering wheel feels like faux leather. They wouldn't let me drive it, even though it was outside. They did let me drive a nearly $70k F150 platinum though. That was a nice truck. The new 3.5 ecoboost with the 10 speed gets down. It also has selectable active 4wd, thought that was pretty cool.

They "didn't want to put miles on it". And they were legit about it, they had the car on the lot for like 15 days, it had like 10 miles on it IIRC. It definitely hadn't been driven. I also didn't see an ADM sticker on it, didn't discuss price though because I wasn't interested in purchasing it.

you can option an F150 up to 70k? and I thought porsche had the market cornered on crazy options

I would have been around 70 otd. MSRP was around $65k...lol. It must have been a Limited trim level with all the options, the platinum only gets up to about $60k on fords site.

also some personal feel, and thoughts after a day extensive forest roads - heavy twisties driving. With usual public road surface conditions, including 4 hours rain drive, and 3-4 tank of gas later....

In short, this car to me is a wanna be Evo which same time try to be an STI, in a good way. We all know the positive things about this car, so i will be critical with it for now.
According to magazines etc it is faster then both, but to me not as stable as the Evo(i will explain it below), and not as comfortable ride as the STI, Specially as soon as you leave the normal driving mode option. Remotely sounds also like an STI when you on it, that is good or bad, i leave it up to you.

High speed or sharp turn exits /under heavy pressure the car reminds me slightly a FWD car with TQ steer. I find myself always "looking for the road with the steering wheel" at that point with this car. This phenomenon doesn't happens with an Evo which is also based on the FWD platform. Also the steering is very heavy compere to the Evo, RS rear reacts well on steering inputs. But when you are at the edge with a car, rear action steps in only after you have some really noticeable "Fwd TQ steer feel like" action at the steering wheel first. Drift and Race Track mode useless on public roads(probabaly for a good reason lol) , its a gimmick at that point. Did not drove this car on track yet.
I do trust the magazine numbers in this case, which are stating this car far faster then an Evo. Surely in stock form doesn't feels that way. They seems pretty even in performance, but the Evo does have a turbo rush. RS very linear when comes down to power delivery which is boring in this case, probably that is why feels even or slower then an Evo.
Also the car blends in too much to everyday traffickers.

This is so far. Let's the second day begin. Also the fuel consumption to me same as the Evo.

this is ONLY MY OPINION AND IMPRESSIONS after first day of testing.
