Feal finally got back to me. They do run the spring on the top side. No pictures of the setup. He said he likes the divorced setup better though since thats how the factory did it and that it doesnt reduce clearance to anything. So ya, not much help there.

Thanks. So far it seems okay although I haven't driven the car yet. Still need to do the fronts.
In the rear, with a 7" spring and a helper spring at half compression when the car is off the ground, the car is .75" lower than stock under its own weight. looks like I have another inch of adjustment with the helper spring. So as far as ride height, mission accomplished I think. I wanted to be close to stock so I will adjust it to be .25" or so lower than stock. The setup should allow that.

On to the front...
Is the weather actually nice enough to drive the car once you get the fronts done?
I am not shooting for a super low car either. I think .75" lower is going to be perfect for me. Once I put the front splitter on, this thing is going to scrape on everything...

The weather is still pretty cold but it's trending toward warmer days. I have a track event scheduled for the 19th but it might still be in the 30's then. I might just take the GTI if so.
While doing some research on good alignment shops, I found out there are none very close to my new place of residence. I then decided to finally invest in a good string alignment setup.
This was surprisingly pretty easy to setup and use. The most tedious part is lowering the car down, driving it back and then forward to settle the suspension and then take measurements again. Luckily this setup is mounted on the car so you don’t have to reset it every time.
This is also the first car I have owned that had jack points so low. Even with my very modest .5” lower set height, I can’t get my quickjacks under the car without driving the car up some ramps and wooden blocks.
So, now I have the coilovers fully installed with SPL rear toe bars, rear traction bars, front lower camber arms and bumpsteer bits, and the ride height and alignment all done. I have a track event next Friday. Looks like the weather should be mid to high fifties. Currently showing rain so crossing my fingers that changes.
I just put paper under the front tires (on vinyl tiles) and do lock to lock turns. for the rears I just jack up the control arms just a hair above the floor. wont that work too?

Who makes your string kit? I've driven myself crazy trying to do strings without them mounted on the car. That looks so much better.
i mean about lowering and rolling the car back and forth. somehow i get away with paper under the front tires so I can turn the wheel without power steering. previously i use 2 sheets of roof flashing material when on the driveway(unfinished floor).
for the rears i have a left & right floor jack to lift and drop. I also just use 2 6" HF levels (just used as straight edge) and leave marks on my floor and also to square with the doors (instead of the bumpers). then nylon strings for squaring the fronts with rear tires. then 1 6" level + square rule for toes
Be careful doing a track event in MARCH in the North East. I am surprised they even offer it. It will be difficult to get the tires hot, and any idle time whatsoever will cool them off and depending on the compound they will turn back to a greasy mess. I avoid track events before June (I have done May ones, but it has SNOWED as late as May 10th as well).
