I haven't considered that idea. Thanks! I'll see about it. Might take up as much space as race ramps in the back (which I was trying to avoid), but who knows, and might be a lot cheaper Appreciate the suggestion.
I had the tire rack specifically built hanging forward rather than the typical over-the-bed design because when the car is on the trailer I need to again be able to put the bumper cover on so I need some space. It came out pretty well and am overall pleased with it.
I never thought about bringing a paddock bike. Hmm, that's a really good idea and I can just strap it there.
ive seen people use a couple piece of 2x6 boards stacked up to back up the truck on. i just use the trailer jack at the front to jack up the trailer and suv up with it. been working fine for me.
my trailer just showed up tuesday, got an 18 foot from dively manuf. (econotrailer.com). not bad at all for $2400 delivered to my house. if i can get DMV to stop giving me a ration of **** ill be using it this week. still need to explore winch/tire rack options.

What was the lead time on that? Do they stock the standard configuration on the website or are they made-to-order?
I daily too many miles for a truck, so can't justify selling the Civic. Can't afford to add a truck as a third vehicle.
For the 4-6 events I do, it's not so bad.
i know people who rent uhual box truck and trailer. at least you're getting to the track and not just blowing money on the car to hard park. just kidding
We upgraded the Jeep to a new Touareg and added an airdam to the trailer because the rocks from towing has peppered the eff out of the evo hood and bumper.
Its a 2015 Touareg TDI Lux and tows easily as good as the jeep did. So far getting about 2mpg towing better, right around 20mpg now. And daily driving is incomparable. Touareg has been fantastic at everything. Already at 5500miles and have had it 3months.

Dallas J, what's the length of your trailer? Total length and the dove tail portion? I am beginning my search for a nice aluminum open trailer and trying to figure out length.
I went short cause its all I need, its a 16ft with about 2ft on the dove tail. Weight without the air dam and box was around 1100lbs. I think dam and box were around 100lbs more.
2005 VW Touareg V8 with air suspension and towing package. Looking to tow the evo this summer and noticed some people in here are driving touaregs/cayennes and was wondering if there is anything to look out for. Now I'm in the market for a trailer and may go with an econotrailer but I'm also considering buying a friends trailer.
How important is the dove tail?
My friend has a non-dove tail trailer that I can probably get a good price but if it makes loading a nightmare its not worth it. I would also be concerned road clearance of a dovetail as some lots/roads in PA are not good.
Closed or open center? Is there any big benefits to either?
The car is a SM autoX car and I plan to run a splitter this summer.
Thanks for all the useful info already in the thread
i live in PA, i have a 15' trailer with dovetail, no clearance issues at all with it. i got an open deck trailer for two reasons, it's lighter and give you access under the car. i've done alignment or work under the car while it's on the trailer.
To start out towing an open is best. However to properly answer the question depends on how many events you do and what the locations are like. In my case all tracks I visit in this region don't have garages so the enclosed payed for itself the very next event that got very cold and wet. However in FL both Sebring and Homestead had garages so I unloaded everything in there and didn't bother with the trailer at all. But to properly (aka safely) tow an enclosed you really need a truck truck.
