excellent results are just a state of mind. My standard for excellent results obviously is higher than yours.

oh yeah, you're well known for your exceptional threshold of quality that you maintain at all times.

i know its hard for you to understand this line of reasoning, but bear with me here.

we'll take my car for example.

stock ecu, trav tuned, minor mods.

it is safe, reliable, and responsive on both the street and track. i've made many a solid run on many different types of tracks from autocross to time trials. the car does quite well, thanks.

or there's brian's car, another great example. trav pretty much rescued that ride from the dead.

so once again, ill-conceived and pointless post. i guess i should expect nothing more at this point.

speaking of minor mods, i've been reading on these forums about AP tunning, specifically the COBB one. I was wondering in your guys minds since you know way more about these things then i do at this point in time, is it worth doing as a first mod. My buddy has one for his wrx and he loves it. Just wondering what your opinions were. Thanks a bunch guys.

I think that a good tune is and will always be the best mod someone can invest in, especially on the Evo platform. However, I would not recommend using Cobb to tune or be used as a piggyback. Cobb is an excellent company and do very well in the Subaru community, but for evo's using open source tuning with ecuflash, evoscan, etc is your best and cheapest bet

I do agree with Holiday63,

However, I have the AP for my 08 X and have had great success using it as gateway into my ECU. I have not used any maps from COBB, so I can not speak for their success, but have had maps written specifically for my set up. I like the versitility of being able to flash the ECU at will, having valet and anti theft maps, and the ability to remove the unit and reinstall at will too.

That being said, when I purchased my AP the only ECU flash available at that time, that I knew of, were ECUTEK, and COBB AP.

I would research the available systems, ask lots of questions, and choose what is best for your goals and planned mods.

Eric, get BR to buy an actual timing system and you would get alot more people out. It is fine if you want a super low stress event.

David and the entire team at BR have been great to me through the entire process, but every setup has its problems. If you aren't confident at completing a task, then why try and do it and do a half assed job? Why not just stick with what you know until you learn enough to give it a shot? At least that is how I feel.

On another note, I found out today on the phone with David that I will have the first Evo 9 with their 2.1 L shortblock and head. Mike is probably cursing the fact that I threw this project in his lap, but as always he is doing a fantastic job. We just need to come up with a solution for the Oil feed for the MIVEC head as the hole drilled by BR is too small for the stock line. I might have to go the -AN route or something along those lines. I hate to have to drill it out and risk clogging the oil passages...

Who updated the tags with number 2 on the list? Oh the entertainment this forum provides...
fight?

there is no doubt DB knows how to build motors, build parts, and tune cars - nobody car argue with that. It just sucks to see he tells people he isnt confident in some of the ecu mods like ecu boost - but whatever, I use my stuff everyday and it works as well as many other kids who just tinker with there own cars and read the stock ecu forums.

so anyone can take it for what its worth....other than that your def. better off with ecu boost, especially with the V7 gear based tables. It gives you complete control of your boost curve so you can run rock solid boost and tune it to your needs plus there is no doubt u can hold more boost with it to red line vs. mbc as I have run both.

good luck on that build....sounds awesome - should be a pretty crazy street car on e85 with the hta green.

Personally, i would not recommend the AP. Get EcuFlash, purchase Evoscan and get a protune somewhere to maximize your output potential.

Anyone have experience with having their 4g63 head milled?

Took my Buschur stg3 head off yesterday and sure enough the gasket had failed pretty bad. My concern is that with arp headstuds a metal o-ringed head, and only 34 psi, how in the hell did it fail so bad within 5000 miles. I'm having j&s put some tools on the head to see if it's squared and the deck is level, I just want to know what to expect after a machine shop mills it. Do I have them re-cut the metal o-rings? First time having this issue but Im making sure it's the last. Got some MAP L19 headstuds on the way (thank you xrouguex for the help) and a fresh gasket.

O-ring heads are hard to cut...first they deck the head to take the warp out..then they have to re- cut the orings in...90% of the failures of a oringed head /block is the oring are cut incorrectly....I have actually given up on the oring ,,always seems like a week link.....your gasket most likley failed from heat not from to much boost.....

Almost got the car dialed back in. Was able to turn the wastegate rod cap down another half turn last night and got to test today.

Yesterday, I was hitting 20psi @ 4800 and 26.5 @ 5200rpms
Today, I was hitting 20psi @ 4000 and 28.5 @ 4600rpms

Probably another 1/2 turn of the cap and I'll be completely set!!!!!

ALso, whoever is running the Hallman Pro MBC....where did you mount yours? Pics?
