Rebuilding my VIII
I'm really sorry to see that your learning experience is so difficult. But I guess that's when you learn the most.
Perhaps this may be of inspiration? Hopefully you will soon have it all back together then you can bring it out to do some of this.....

Looks like a blast, but I'll be happy to just drive it
How's your new motor coming along?

Whoever had the car before you didn't take care of it. Lots of little things. I have a pretty good sized list of things to do even after I get it running.
Hope your new one is running okay!

Mother of God!!! You have done way more then I would ever have done on it. Once the motor went I was like ya I got this. And then I was like uh no. Im glad that you have kept her going.......
I dont care what you say this car is Vudoo!!! It seemed like when I made progress something else would go eveb if it was small.

Funny you should ask about my motor because I just spoke to Kevin at Evolution Dynamics yesterday and I decided to go a new route for the sake of saving myself from making costly mistakes. I'm going to have him build me a 2.4 long rod stroker. the parts should go on order this month (January), the build complete next month (February), and the install and tune happens early March.

Costly mistakes? That's the fun part! Haha.
I'm sure it'll be a beast. I'd LOVE to build a 2.4 on the side and have it ready to drop in if I needed it. Maybe that'll happen some day. Best of luck with yours!

Great thread man! Just turned 20 and I inherited an evo 8 that was in pieces and am currently putting it back together. Thank God the motor isn't blown, it would take me 5 years to do what you have done. Its just a matter of putting the intake mani, turbo, exhaust, IC, etc. Really just a matter of putting everything back with the correct hardware because it was taken apart so unorganized (so theres bolts/nuts all over the place), but its a great learning experience and I'm coming down to the final bits and pieces, prior to starting it for the first time in 2 years.
Just wanted to thank you for the pics and great info; I learned a lot. And reading this made my work-day go by faster..=] Wish you the best of luck continuing your build as well.

No problem, man! Keep reading. Hopefully things will start to smooth out and I can have some fun with her.
You should start a thread. You can definitely get lots of help from the forum.

Having a pretty positive today. I got a stubborn roll-pin out of my last rail/fork so I was able to get them installed again:

I also made some progress on an issue that occurred some time ago but didn't rear it's ugly head until the other day when I started to pull the motor again.
I'm not sure if I posted about this, but several months ago I had a small electrical fire. I didn't install my starter wire correctly and it rubbed through and ended up shorting out and ruining my charger harness. Luckily, I had a spare. I swapped it out and was good to go.
Well, the heat must have melted the plastic housing on the starter solenoid. When I turned my ratchet the other day to take the cable back off, the plastic broke and the stud came out.

Instead of buying a starter, I found a solenoid that I'm going to try. From AutoZone, the solenoid is $182. More expensive than the whole starter.
I found one on eBay for $27.50. We'll see how it works.

Well, I got a LOT done today. Unfortunately (yep, there's always a caveat) I'm not going to be happy with the transmission. I believe I bent one of the rails every so slightly. My 3-4 shift is pretty rough. It wasn't like that before. I broke off a "punch" while I was hammering out the double roll pin. Had to press it out. I'm sure it bent it a little. It's going to have to be okay.
Engine, trans, and transfer case are all in. Exhaust, shifter, slave cylinder are in place. Valve cover is on, coils and cover are on. About half my wiring. I'll start tomorrow with axles and see how things go. I'd imagine I can crank her up tomorrow night.

Well, she goes. I spent WAY too long messing with the starter. I think it's going to be an issue. I'll give it some more time, though.
Cranked up well. No fluids spilled. I didn't manage to patch my condenser in the right place, so I'll have to try that again or just replace it.
I'm not happy with my transmission, but I'll give it a little time. If it drives well enough, it'll be okay. I have a feeling I'll be saving my pennies, though.
Initial impression of the clutch is good. I made sure I adjusted my pedal before I even started the car. Smooth engagement. I think I'm going to like it.
I'll get the hood and bumper on and take her for a proper spin later. Kinda done for the day.

Got the hood and bumper on and turned my insurance back on. Went for a little drive. Shifting definitely sucks. I may attempt to pull the trans out the bottom and replace the rail and fork. it's really bad. Drives, but pretty dang annoying.

It ran great this morning. Even at 14psi, it feels quick and super responsive. I think my old actuator was smurfed. I'll hook my 3-port back up and start making adjustments soon.
Ordered an oil cooler core today. That's my next project. I love STM and I like their kit. But if I have to assemble it and make brackets anyway, I don't mind sourcing the parts myself. I think I can put the kit together for about $185. We'll see. I've never worked with AN fittings before, so it should be fun.
