Rebuilding my VIII
I went through this whole entire thread just now and that was GUTTING no crap... I am sorry for you.... let me tell you my story... lol
I bought an Evo with 15k Miles on it. The guy had done some work not knowing crap about the car to the engine and the balance shaft locked up ON ME and broke the timing belt destroying that engine about an hour or so of signing the title. THEN I bought me another engine, a stock evo 8 engine claimed to have 70k miles or whatever. I am running stock boost.... after maybe 1000 miles SPUN a Rod bearing.... another one down. I DELETED THE BALANCE SHAFT, ALL RACE BEARING, and ARP ACL Race Everything and did it RIGHT this time. THEN Since the motor was right I come around a blind corner and this damn tow truck driver has a line across the road tied to a freaking guard rail DESTROYING the front end of the car.... so now, new headlights, new fenders, new tie bar, new radiator, new front bumper, new side skirts, new rear bumper (for kicks), and here we go again..... so over the course of 3 years of owning my Evo I have went from 15,400 miles to 19,500 on three engines and a new front end. Once they get a curse, they keep it. BUT I am going to give her a shot I think she is falling in love with me as am I with her new heart and body. So just give her what she wants and she will give it back. Don't give up, I didn't.... surprisingly.

Man, that's rough. I don't plan on giving up!
I picked up a blown MAP 2.3 from a local yesterday. I've decided to put my 2.4 on hold. I'm still buying the 64 block and crank but it's going to the shelf for a while.
I'm parting out this blown 2.3 to help with my rebuild. His cradle was in good shape so I'm going to take my block to the machine shop to see if it can all be machined to spec. If so, I'll then make the decision of either going with one stock rod or picking up a set of used aftermarkets for a good price.
If anyone is interested I'm selling:
Set of MAP Ultimate Duty H11 head studs (studs only)
100mm 4g64 crank
3x156mm MAP Ultimate Duty Rods
3x Wiseco stroker pistons 10.5 compression
Excellent condition oil pump with BSE installed
Great condition oil pan

ARP rod bolts
head gasket
front cover gasket
oil pump gasket
battery tie down
evo IX BOV
Let's do this!

I don't have an intake exhaust sensor. I didn't do anything with the exhaust cam sensor. Not really anything to do.
Things are moving! Parts are arriving today.

Well, I got some things in today. ACLs, ARPs, IX metal BOV. Didn't get my gaskets in, yet. Got a notice that they shipped today. There's a chance they'll be here Saturday, but I'm guessing I'll end up waiting until next week to button it back up. Oh well. No rush.

Well, parts arrived. That's the good news. Got my boost gauge installed again. I was set to make some progress today. Buuuut, the new machine shop has let me down. They told me they could do it Friday. I went to some lengths to get them my parts. Friday afternoon they told me it'd be today. I called several times and got the machine. Drove out there this afternoon and they were closed. Boo. So much for that.
Might get my front cover on this weekend at some point.

Front cover on and torqued. Oil filter housing on and torqued. Tensioner on and torqued. Alternator back on. Big water pipe back on. Waiting game
The goal for tomorrow is to drop in the pistons and get the oil pan back on.

What a heart breaker! Your positive attitude after that is incredible. Most(including me) would have been ready to give up. How in the world did the front balance shaft come loose and start walking from the front cover!? Do you think you forgot to torque the bolt behind the spider cover on the oil pump?

I think that's exactly what happened.
I was very disheartened when I thought of tearing it all apart and starting from scratch. I go into this knowing that it could go poorly. There's a chance that the crank may have taken a little damage, but I'm hoping all is okay. Could be a 100k engine, too! You just never know. It wasn't much of an investment to get it back up and running. Rod bearings, one rod/piston, cut the bearing seat with ARPs, head gasket. That's really about it. If it goes, I'm just going to have to build that 2.4

very easy mistake to make. i did the exact same thing when I built my motor, and only discovered it when I made a last minute decision to switch from a stubby to a full length machined shaft. The lessons learned and knowledge gained from projects like this cannot be summed up in dollar amounts.
