The issues you refer to on the WRX/STI are again minor (if you wish to call the Evo/lancer issues minor). With the STI it's a simple reflash, much like in the Evo. The paint issue is exactly the same as the Evo as well.
Here are the current issues http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...ticleId=132627. This one refers to an oil supply line. I don't think it affects the STI. Here is an STI recall, which is just a reflash http://www.iwsti.com/forums/2008-sti...-lean-map.html.
Wait, so you expect to judge a car by the forums? NASIOC is also far larger than EvoM (over 100000 members) so of course by basic probability you are going to see more stories on NASIOC than on Evom. Most of those stories also involve modified cars. Another factor, people tend to search for a forum when they have an issue, not when their car is running perfectly fine. In most of the independent surveys I've seen, Subaru easily ranks above Mitsubishi.
Japanese car companies have been involved in warranty cover-ups for years. It just wasn't until the Mitsu. scandal that these same companies started to admit their products weren't perfect (Honda gearboxes anyone). By admitting faults with their product they risked loosing face, so they just didn't.
Dig around to see how many recalls Toyota, Honda and Nissan had before and after the Mitsu. debacle.

Makes sense given the Japanese culture.

yes i know these cars are direct competition but i think they still vary bit from each others target audience
i would think the WRX is more performance based where as the RA is more comfort car with all the bells and whistles with some performance

for instance
in a drag or autoX, racing in general i would prefer the WRX because of the bigger engine and handling
the RA would be better in stop and go traffic becuase of the auto tranny(yes it is!) given that it doesnt over heat, and also on freeways coz of 6sp Vs 5
all other/in the middle it's subject to personal preference

When I test drove the 09 WRX, I thought it was refined for what it was. Quiet and smooth. I am waiting for a RA drive to compare, but I have the feeling it will be noisy just from the in car videos I have seen. The real difference is auto/manual and the MPG. Tests show the WRX way better on fuel than the RA. All performance being near equal I would sway toward the WRX just for that aspect with fuel prices today. Why pay more than you need to all else being the same. I think the AWD of the the RA is a better system and I do think it looks better but the WRX is not as bad in person as it is in pics.

Exactly, I think people vastly over exaggerate the ugliness of the car (which is an easy fix anyways).

No. It says they're not responsible if you damage the car by running with VDC off. That's different than if you turn VDC off, your warranty is voided.

Good subtle catch on that. That makes a difference.

The 2.5 GT Impreza IS direct competition with the SST RA. Whether or not Mitsu or Subaru or anyone else intended that to be the case is irrelevant. They are both automatic, awd, turbo charged sedans (or hatchbacks), and cost $27K or more with options.

Subaru's decision to split the line and rename the cars was their choice, but it didn't change their competition in the segment. It only shows that they have a better manual transmission performer in the WRX, and a softer performer in the 2.5 GT...the RA slots in the middle performance wise and IS a good value for the $.

Except that the 2.5 GT isn't Subaru's midsized sports sedan, that spot is for the WRX. Yes the 2.5 GT is automatic and fully loaded but the Ralliart was designed to compete with the WRX, every article cites this. The Ralliart was originally compared to the 08 WRX so shouldn't it be compared to the 09 WRX? The fact that Mitsubishi didn't make a manual Ralliart is irrelevant, people who are considering the Ralliart will consider the WRX.

No it's pretty ugly. I recommended an 08 WRX last year to my brother who was looking for a new car preferably AWD. He took one for a test drive and was fine with the car (he doesn't care about all-out performance) but he couldn't get over the ugliness of the car and bought an Audi A3 Quattro instead. The looks are a turnoff to many.

Wow so because your brother didn't like it, it's a superbly ugly car? It looks good to plenty of people and I have a feeling that given its performance, plenty of people will be willing to get over it.

The car is pretty ugly and the majority of people and even reviews agree with this. The wrx may outperform the ralliart, but many people would think that the ralliart that can perform close or at the same level of the wrx and have looks that are more appealing than the wrx.
