Did you ever find out which vehicle it came out of? Like I said, when I bought it I was told it was an Evo7 JDM engine and trans. Now, you've got me wondering exactly what it was out of...Originally Posted by David Buschur

This trans has the starter in the stock location, which honestly I am not happy with. I like it up top and I LOVE THE STARTER I am using, the engine spins over twice as fast as it does with the stock starter. It's a trade off I'm will to take if the trans works though! haha The trans is a 4 speed and the gear ratios are close but not exact.
Yes, I think I've figured out what the trans is out of but now that I am going to pursue using it and they are so hard to find I am going to stay tight lipped about what it is.

I bought a transmission that was suppose to be the EVO7 GTA trans. I didn't know what to look for and after I got it found out it was not. After some looking it was quite odd what I had actually. Doing some research came up with some odd ball numbers that made no sense. So I've spent probably 30 hours in the last two weeks researching what I had with very little real information being found. The transmission though looked promising. Daniel, my brother, figured out how to make an actual EVO8 transfer case fit on it so now a stock EVO7-8-9 Tcase can be used, that's awesome, let's us have the LSD.
Today I took a trip to Vinny's and he tore the trans apart. He was amazed. He says that the trans isn't even comparable to the other trans we tried to use that I broke. He also feels this trans will hold even more power than the 1g/2g trans.
While we were working on it, we found a part number we needed.........sadly the part and transmission has been discontinued. So, that sucks as it leaves us no product to build and sell. I have to celebrate for myself though as it should be an answer for my car and believe me, it's getting tested!
Now, the good news is I think we are onto something and I have another transmission I found being shipped into us to see if these two are similar or not, if so then we will be in business for sure. I should have that answer this week sometime if all goes well.
IF....IF, what we are thinking works out then this is going to be one bad *** set up for the masses. There is a BIG IF there AND it's going to take some custom machine work that is going to be big money to have done.
Here is our current full plan. The trans is apart, Vince is ordering parts to test fit and rebuild/make it stronger. Port work, line pressure, accumulator mods etc. We will also have to figure out the wiring to make it all shift and work. Once we verify if we can or can't build more this one is going together and going in my car.
The torque converter is also different for this trans and the converters we already built seem like they are going to work amazing. SO the new converter is being looked at to compare to what we are using now to see if they can be duplicated, if not we will have to do something else on that too.
I am being secretive on some of this stuff because IF it all works, it's gonna be HOT HOT HOT!!!
I am completely geeked out over this.

Dave, i love the automatic turbos myself. So I am keeping a close eye here. also like that you are manually shifting too. my only question will there be any way to get soft shifts during normal driving? or is this just gonna be tagged a drag race mod?
Newbie
David, We exchanged PMs on the MLR a long time ago about the Evo 7 GTA. Since then I have done lots of work on mine and its now running something like 500/500.
I have a spare standard Evo 7 GTA box, plus 2 TCs plus 2 valve bodies if thats of any use to you. I was just about to strip it down to repace the wave ring and upgrade the clutch packs so I had a fresh spare. Car is now ready for the track so its going to Santa Pod in a few weeks for its first timed run.

david do you think this trans is geared better then the other trans being used for drag use and street use?

I only drove the car maybe 4 miles. The torque converter being loose takes a lot of that hard hit out of the shifts. I didn't think it shifted hard the little bit I drove it. It's firm but not "annoying". My TH400 in the '32 is full manual too, with the converter it has it doesn't shift to hard either. It's not a "bang shift" is what I'd call it. Doesn't worry you that it is wrecking the trans when it shifts normally. The downshift is a little hard. I really need to drive one more to give excellent feedback but that is my feeling on the little time I had in it.Originally Posted by 94AWDcoupe

IF English works out an actual shift box that can be programmed I'd guess they could work out line pressure/shift points based on TPS/RPM and make it shift nice and easy. I am not interested in an auto trans though and that's why I call this a clutchless 4 speed, it's only an auto if it shifts automatically in my book

Thank you very much for the offer. I am really stuck right now on making this work. The EVO7 trans appears to be easier to get than this one and a few weeks ago the EVO7 trans seemed like it wasn't obtainable. I've had a few offers now. Originally Posted by Babylon6

By the end of this week I should know whether or not we can make this trans a reality for the masses, if so it's a winner. I got very good news today on the one big special part I will need and it can be manufactured, so that's very good. Now to figure out if we can get transmissions or not....

Funny you should ask that.....no it is not geared better. Changing the gearing though I am guessing is possible, that is another area we have to look into this week before this trans goes together. Honestly though, the gearing in this should work and based on the clutches in it (HUGE) it would also make 4th gear more usable. It would bring the dream of running my car in the standing mile to reality for sure, slap in a tighter converter and the top speed would be INSANE at reasonable RPM.Originally Posted by evodan2004

While I was at Vince's one of he things on my list were to figure out the final drive. So as soon as that case came off him and I started counting teeth. Then I was disappointed at first and then we started talking about all the cars him and I have owned and raced. Buicks are a car we have in common and we turned to those, most of those cars are running 3.42 gears.
I'd really like to see a 4.11'ish gear set, it would make more sense for 95% of the guys out there. Take a look around at the dyno graphs posted and most guys are on the down hill of the HP chart by 7500-8000 rpm. They'd all benefit from a better gear in the car instead of hanging the engines out there at 8500+ where they aren't making any HP or TQ. In my case the car makes excellent power way past 8500 rpm but I'd still rather keep the RPM lower towards peak torque where it will accelerate harder.

When we release the V2 Magic box it will have line pressure control integrated and programmable versus what ever elements you want. We are talking about setting it up like the E manage where you pick the axis size, breakpoints, and X/Y values.Originally Posted by 94AWDcoupe

So we could have line pressure (in percentage) vs something like-
TPS and RPM
TPS and Boost
etc.
David,
I presume you are talking about the new trans final drive? The base trans we are using is 4.13 unless you got a variant somehow. The initial research said there was a 4.13, 4.63, and a 4.406. When I cross referenced the output shaft they all have the same tooth count between them and the ring gear listed in ASA led me to believe that only a 4.13 was available.
Also we tested the stock converter in the Evolander last night. Remember this is just a 224/230ish SOHC with an VIII turbo. Jeff could hold it back to 3500 pretty easy and it started getting squirrelly around 3700. This was without or normal mods to make it easier to hold back. The car makes 160 of its 224whp against the converter according the dyno as well. I have all the files to upload both in his "Evolander" thread and then our 4 speed threads.
As promised-
We tested the stall on the 100% stock converter and were amazed to see it would hold back 3700 with a little bit of time, 2.7 seconds, and took 166whp/195 ft lbs to generate enough power to do so. At that point it wanted to brake loose. Jeff was later able to get the car to show what max stall is on the stocker and ended up with 4200. In the real world it would take a 50 shot to get it to do that as well as our other mods we use in the DSM autos. The restalls that David and I are working with will allow bigger turbos to get where they need to be provided the motor can make enough power to get up on it. I think we wont have problems though
Here is the graph showing what was going on-

Note that the sheet is scaled to where Jeff actually started stalling (5.72) seconds) and then cant hold it back (8.42).

Yes, we've opened 3 of the transmission you and I were using (the one I broke) and all were 4.13's, that is ideal I think. Originally Posted by JohnBradley

That is not what I was talking about above however, I am referring to this new trans we have apart and getting ready to install in my car.
More updates.
Did some quick figuring. The output shaft on this trans, the part I broke is EVO sized as I mentioned before, so it's just leaps and bounds larger than the original trans we started with. The sun gear and planetary gears that broke are also larger. The sun gear is 16% larger and the planetary gears are 33% larger. The planetary gear and the shafts are what seem to have broken first, so that is an excellent improvement.
We also found a company that seems to be very motivated to help us with casting parts we need to make all of this a reality. I am getting time and dollar estimates now on the parts we need.
I also located one more of the exact transmissions I have here, that's good news for some lucky soul!
