Evo vs. STI | Anything and Everything [ALL THREADS MERGED]
Let me guess your an STI fan? I guess you won't comment on the reported pining problem or comments made by owners? http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=371994
MRT a very well known company from AU talked about the internals. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ight=internals
http://www.mrtrally.com.au/forums/t...p?TOPIC_ID=9188
So would you like to comment on the cast pistons used in the STI or the possible camber design that might be causing the detonation problems? Also all of the new model STIs including the 03 EJ207 motor use a hypereutectic material and not a forged design.

I personally think it all comes down to what you think a car is worth......some people think the Evo 8 is worth $5000 over MSRP and will spend that money, others think it's worth MSRP and not a penny more.
Subaru thinks they're STI is worth X....i personally think that X price is way too much.
But I agree to each there own. If you want to spend the money for an STI then go for it, if you want to spend over MSRP for an Evo 8 then go for it.
Just don't B*tch about the price after you've bought the car........or when Boe's Turbo'd Lancer makes your STI look like a expensive Civic at the track

I think the fact that tuners have already reached 350-370hp with new STi using about $750 in bolt-ons speaks for itself. The fact also is that no engines have detonated messily despite the possible ping/det problems.
Both the STi and the Evo are not perfect - The Evo has a soft clutch, a design to protect the gearbox internals. The STi has a very strong gearbox, and a strong clutch. The Evo 4G63 is a proven design that will take more power. The USDM STi is a semi-proven design - new, but still based on tried and true Subaru motors. The Evo has a very good suspension setup, but no front LSD. The STi has a very good setup that gives it's owners DCCD-A and a front LSD.
Both are fast. Numerous tests have proved that, no matter what, time differences around a track are almost non-existant. The Driver will be the only factor for those battles. In a straight line, the STi is faster, stock for stock. In the twisties, the Evo inspires a bit more confidence. Learn to use the front diff on the STi properly, though, and it will fly.
I don't consider the price difference to be a major factor. Others may, but given the operating costs of either of these cars, in terms of tyres, brake pads, clutch replacements and whatnot, a $2,000 difference would simply be the least of my worries. My choice would still be based on simple factors - which car am I more comfortable with, which car's interior do I like better, which car does what I want it to.
And to answer the original question, I think both will sell as many cars as are made.
Cheers,
Paul Hansen

It's just a beef of mine, but many people equate rallying with WRC only. Rallying occurs everywhere, at many levels, with participants in anything from prepped Group N cars to their dads Corolla borrowed for the weekend. Nearly every car is capable of rallying - if it's prepared properly - it's if you want to win that you start looking for the fast cars. And even then, because of classes, you don't necessarily want to rally in a Evo or STi, because that class is far more competitive and requires far more investment beyond the base car cost.

All the magazines put the STI ahead of the EVO?
I just got back from checking out a slvr-STI at a dealership here in Seatown and the salesman started off by pulling a pad of paper out of his coat pocket and telling me how in all the popular car-mags they put the STI ahead. I chuckled for a second before I went on to ask him if he's checked the mags himself and ofcourse he said WELL NO BUTTTT, I stopped him there and proceeded to enlighten him on how every bit of information he had was all turned upside down and around because for the last few months Iv'e been checking out all the mags myself and not one put the STI first.
I persolly was planning on getting an STI next year up until I checked them out in person, boy did I feel stupid bragging on the STI over EVO to my buddies when I saw the STI just after seeing the much surprized beauty of the EVO. To me the STI looks better in mags but the exact opposite in the real.
Well after eyeballing STI and EVO this is my conclusion:
STI: hideous rear wing, unprooven motor, unneccesary hood scoop that jiggles in motion, tacky ground effects, NO RADIO-WHAT ON GODS GREEN EARTH, and tacky blue but nice seats.
EVO:actually kind of cool rear carbon fiber wing, prooven motor, sweet front mounted intercooler, and just nicely styled all around.
Anyway this was a very meaningful day for me simply because Iv'e been sitting on the fence for too long-EVO/STI-STI/EVO-EVO/STI, and on and on.....
A little about myself, I'm 23, starting my own business early next year, currently drive an 02' wrx soon to be my wife's, live in Seattle, getting an EVO next year, and I just registered here on evo-m.net. PEACE

You are correct - every magazine put the Evo ahead of the STi. Every single one that I've seen.
Several of the articles are archived on my website (linked in my sig) if you want to reference them...

Since the STi wasn't out when I bought my Evo, I took the advice of the car mags from the UK that I get. All of them said the Evo was the best, then the US car magazines confirmed that.
even before the official release of the magazines... rumor was the EVO was a tad ahead of the STi..
but it's really about what the driver thinks - close competitive rivalry now in the states

MadeEvoVIII:
I wouldn't say that the front mount intercooler is that big of an advantage, and let me explain. A lot of us are going to upgrade the Evo's intercooler eventually. Also, I'm assuming most STi owners will upgrade to front mounts. The price range for upgraded Evo FMIC are between 800 and 1300. That's the same relative ballpark as WRX front mounts.
I think it all comes down to taste. I like the Evo. I'm lukewarm towards the Sti. Others like the Sti. And basically, driver matters more than any other performance part we will ever install.
Trollski: Go back to Nasioc or wherever you've come from. Or agree to meet some of these guys at the track (Jedi, 2Cool, WRC4EVR, etc.). That's where it matters anyway, not on some silly forum.

From: Why do they always call the Evo the Dark Side?
I thought the conclusion of most of the reviews was: these cars are incredibly close, the Evo's lap times are a hair better, but the STi is a better daily driver, pick whatever floats your boat.

True enough;
Thanx for all the replies guys, this was my first plug and I wanted to put out a pithy thread. We all love competition and there's none better than the EVO/STi.
p.s. Any of you guys from washington, somewhat close to Seattle.
Peace

I have read 4-5 reviews and all have given the edge to the evo. I got my superstreet today and in the sti test drive they went as far to say the evo was quicker 0-60 than the sti, but that the sti was faster in the 1/4. They said to hit 60 you have to shift into third gear. They also gave the evo the edge. I love it!!!!!!!!
