The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
Couldn't shift into reverse 3 times this week... weather has been in sub 30's i had to go shift 1-5 a couple times to get it finally engage. and then the other 2 times, i had to pumpthe clutch and try it a couple times.
I sadly have 1-2, 2-3 and reverse issues
I gave it to my dealer while I was out snowboarding and they claimed they drove it everyday and it drove "perfectly normal" so they had it for 4 days and did nothing to it. As soon as I got it back it drove like it always does (poorly). Now they are asking me to bring it back in to take another look at it, sense I won't let the issue die. I am so put off by this...it is my first brand new car, first Mitsubishi, and first car this expensive...I am extemely disappointed in the whole situation, especially my dealer.
Thank God for this thread though! hopefully the service department will read through it and get an idea of what is wrong.

That's just sad. I love my car, don't get me wrong, but I hate the transmission in this thing. It's the roughest and least enjoyable to drive of any manual car I've ever driven. I've never driven a car that makes me cringe when I shift gears. I have learned how to shift to get around it, but even then I can't avoid it all the time. Ugh...
Mine was pretty notchy too at first (Mostly 2nd to 3rd. Impossible lol) But after I got some break-in miles on it and a bigger shift knob it seems to be working a lot better. Reverse gives me trouble sometimes too though.
It seems like the problem with 2,3 and reverse is because the reverse gear is made with special arrangement of 2 & 3 for weight saving purposes. After 3k I don't have a problem with syncros anymore. While it became quite smooth it still requires some extra effort to put into those gears.
I'm mostly experiencing the 2nd to 3rd crunch, although it's fine if you baby it in there. only had a reverse problem once so far; i'm at 550 miles. Definitely gets a lot smoother after warmup. Thinking about trying the redline tranny cocktail if it doesnt get much better after break in.
This grinding notchy feeling going from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 really makes me depressed and not want to drive this damn car. God damn it, this is after I changed the fluid to the redline mix, TWM underhood bushings and using a 600g shift knob. Read on some of the posts here that people shift faster to avoid the click and clunk but its worse when I shift faster and non existent or minimal when I shift slower. I dunno...
Hmm,
This is problem is two-parts people/oil related:
1) People don't know how to drive this really touchy tranny. How I do it for perfect shifts (I double clutch and rev match every manual I've driven and this isn't likely helping such a new tranny), is you have to delay (on its own in neutral) the shift going into all gears. What I mean for example, 1--->2 is a shift from 1 then you let the forks and spring returns go by themselves into neutral (shift and let go of stick so it finds neutral on its own, don't move it yourself into neutral, just move it out of the "gears" gate) you will let "it" hang in neutral for a split second, than shift into second.
Perfect each shift.
2) Stock Oil is of the dino substance and the "new" Amsoil is a perfect help to the tranny. People who say that the best oil for the Subie variants was stock, don't know anything about how it felt with Motul 300. Every tranny has its likes and dislikes. Try the oil the makes a nice shift and protects the tranny at the same time. Run a Blackstone on the Redline as I have a feeling it can sheer.
Because of the "smallness" of the transmission as opposed to that of a Subaru (both in oil usage and sheer dimensions), oil is very critical and will likely be a failure point when it comes to extending the life the vehicle.
Also, price comes to mind and the Mitsu oil isn't particular cost effective.

Now that I think about it, I have had that problem in all my manual cars too. Just didn't expect it with a brand new transmission I guess.
ysa
My transmission is grinding when im in gear and step on the gas its drivng me ****ing nuts.. ive been to the dealer twice they replaced a tranfercase seal under warranty and the whole transfercase the otherday and tonight im in 2nd gear step on up to 5grand and the noise is back..
^^Ugh, the #1 reason I have hesitated to purchase an Evo ever since they came out. I love a smooth shifting car and can even appreciate notchiness (ala short shifter).
But grinding gears is almost unbearable especially if you love driving manual and consider yourself a pretty good driver.
