The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
UPDATE: 2800 Miles... Seems to be smoothing out a little bit now. From what I can tell quick gear changes are smoother than slow ones. Mr. Notchy showing his ugly face sometimes going into 3rd gear. Reverse can be tricky when the car is cold. Going to change the oil at 3k and see if I can swap the trans to the Amsoil Cocktail while i'm at it.
UPDATE: 3000 Miles, I don't know if ambient temp has anything to do with it, but its extra notchy now, more so than ever before. Third gear now has gone from notchy to grindy, I am fed up with it and I am going to the service department on Monday. I am seriously considering going to a 09 STi they have on the lot.
Anyway, my shifts get notchy from Any-1, 1-2 and 2-3. I can smoothly go 3-4 and 4-5.
This happens in the mornings when it's slightly cold out. During the day it's not AS bad.
Yeah for those of you who are wondering, after 10k miles on my X, with a Redline mix at 3k, 600g shift knob, TWM base and underhood bushings, the X is notchy as hell from 1 to 2 to 3 in the cold mornings, and improves to 70-80% when fully warmed. It is probably 90% smooth on a warm/hot day. It's never perfect. Even when it's at its smoothest, you can still feel a grind/notch here and there.
Also, ever since I changed my bushings, it seems that I need an extra tug to get into 2 or 4, like I feel that it kinks in between gears, anyone also get this? I did change to a short shifter, so maybe it's a result of the reduced throw, but I can't remember if I felt this kink when using the stock shifter. This makes shifting at higher rpms more difficult and more prone to grinding...

I'm with Sev, grinds going into second, sometimes 3rd at low rpms. But when I'm going all out it's always smooth. I've got about 38k miles now and i've just gotten used to easing it into second gear at low rpms. It doesn't grind at all if I just take an extra fraction of a second to let it slide into second at low rpm.
Update
Update: I posted a while back complaining about the notchiness etc. I was @ 2k miles @ the time. Currently @ 5k miles. My evo gradually grew out of the notchy phase around 3k miles and i noticed it was gone by about 4k miles. Car's become very smooth
. Some more info so you can relate if you have issues:

used to pull towards the left, i had wheel balancing and alignment done, which i think had little effect on performance. I think this car has a break in priod and if you can ride through that

My experience:
< 700 miles on the car.
The transmission is "notchy" in ALL gears. This is to be expected. My friend's EVO 8 was this way, and every EVO manual transmission I have encountered is notchy in the same way. By contrast, the Ford, Honda, Subaru, etc. manuals that I have driven have been much smoother shifting gear-to-gear. In an odd sort of way, I actually prefer the notchiness... it grows on you. ;-)
That being said, there is something else about my 1-2 and 2-3 shifts... As I said, it is not the notchiness I am concerned with. It almost feels as though the syncros are off, though it might simply be a break-in, warming, or fluid issue. Time will tell...
I'm going to be patient with this since I'm not planning any mods in the near future that will compromise my warranty. If what I have is a defect, then the tranny will fail before the 20k mark. If not, then I'm not concerned.

ok so i skimmed this thread (49 pages is too much lol).... but anyhow
I have 15k miles on my evoX gsr and it just started grinding (or a metallic pop sometimes) from 2-3 shifts...not every time but about 20% of the time...and Ive been very careful but it still happens... could it just be fluid?? or should I have them look at the syncros...its like it doesnt speed up and catch?

YAY! I've ready all 49 pages! Whew
After reading all of this I think I'm still sold on the Evo. But when I go to test drive one I will make 100% sure that the tranny doesn't give me any issues, it seems for some people they have no issues at all.
I will be following Kracka's route to the teeth. Works makes some awesome tranny parts for a lot of cars and I trust their work. In the SRT-4 world we've got 3rd gear grinds and pop outs- with Works shift selector and 3rd gear extender all of it is eliminated (except those whose trannys are too far gone).
Good luck to all-

iv read about a fix for some of the issues with this on evoxforums theres a bracket on the xmsn thats adjustable that has fixed this issue for most people by simply sliding it in either direction.

I just put in in my evo x at about 16k miles and the difference was night and day. All the gears are smoother now. I still have the occassional gear that it doesn't slide into perfectly... But overall everything got a whole lot smoother. The Motyl Gear is actually designed for gear boxes that are notchy or hard to shift.
The biggest reason I purchased it was because it's also the same exact weight as the OEM diaqueen. The amsoil and redlines are not.
