Some have slightly more than the other it just depends on different situations.

If you don't like it then get an automatic vehicle.
Dude ur tripping if u say it's normal on all cars, I owned a 93 integra and an 04 civic si and my tranny was never grindy or notchy on those. I now currently own a 2006 rsx type s slammed on buddy club coil overs and it never ever grinds but my Evo x in the other hand which just hit 10,500 miles is notchy as hell. I hate the notchyness but love the Evo. it's a love hate relationship

My buddy has a 2003.5 Mazda speed and a 05 viper. All he bought new and says his has never notched the way my Evo does and I've drove them and they haven't. Goto another car forum and find people complaining. You won't find it because they don't have this big of a problem as mitsu does. Oh as far as "different situations" i have 31K on my 2010. In the 31K miles that I've put on it, I'm sure there should had been a "situation" where second gear didnt notch. Not a single time has it been smooth, yet the dealership says it's completely fine.
Really now ? So you're saying BMW and all the other manufacturers you've listed has perfect tranny? cmon man .

^ that's just an example. Google search and THERE ARE PLENTY. And so you're saying mistu's the only one with this problem? LOL give me a break.

How do you define notching? I have a friends with the same cars you've listed that you've "owned". EVERYONE has notchiness. GRIND is different. Notchiness is NORMAL when you feel the sleeve move along the synchros and the gears. Some ROUGHER than others some smoother where it doesn't bother a person.

Don't tell me that all of your other cars shifted straight like butter with nothing getting in between shifting because you're out of your mind. NOTCHINESS occur from time to time.

Yes there are trannies for bmw that have almost perfect shifting but it still doesn't change the fact that there will be notchiness from time to time.

My Type R never had notchiness even at -30 in the winter.

The GSR EVO is in a class all of its own.

I own an rsx type S as well. I'm a honda guy and have built many fast hondas in my life even now I have a project going on. If you haven't experienced notchiness and grinding THEN YOU'RE one of the lucky ones?. For goodness sakes honda has THIS SAME thread in almost all models especially in clubrsx.

Like you said CounterConcept, I hate the notchiness on our evo x's but I still love it. Not hating on any manufacturers. I'm just stating plain fact.

Ya dude my rsx gives me no notchyness. Now it's not modded to the max but I just got an aem intake buddy club coils and buddy club exhaust. Nothing major but I honestly feel more confident shifting into gears in the rsx then the evo. But meh it's one of those things we gotta deal with, so all I gotta say is cheers to the notchyness. I ain't getting rid if my evo cuz of that.

I changed my transmission fluid with the redline cocktail the first 1000 miles on my evo and changed my shifter cable bushings as well while at it. To everyone here change your gear oil ASAP preferably the first 1000-3000 miles after purchase. There was a lot of metal shavings when I did mine. I could only imagine some people who has been running it for quite some time with so many miles without changing it. Mine honestly is NOT that bad. I even get perfect shifts sometimes.

Glad I found this thread, now I know its not me.

Picked up a 2011 GSR 3 weeks ago. 1st to 2nd when cold sucks. Getting into reverse sucks occasionally. Notchiness mostly, no grinding for me. As the car heats up, it does get better. All other gears are fine.

I purchased a blox weighted type R shift knob. It was the limited series gunmetal. It improved the shifts so much I couldn't believe it. I would suggest it to anyone. I will never go back to stock.

I am using PA90 for rear gear and Redline MTL/MT-90 cocktail for trans. Still notchy and hard to get in first and reverse when cold but much better than stock.

Mods

Hi there this is my first time posting on this forum. I've been having STIs for years and i recently switch for an 08 gsr. The car has 65kms on it and I leave in Canada Quebec where the temperature is currently -20c so yeah freaking cold! I do have the same problem ..grinding...when shifting from 1 to 2 and from 2 to 3. Gets even worst on a cold start even if I let it warm up for a good 5 mins.

So heres my 2 questions for you guys:

The tuning shop were I always go told me about John Sheperd and his tranny repaird. i know there is different options on his website and was curious to find out if anyone here ever hAd his tranny rebuilded there and if it fixed the problem.

Also, I'm waiting for spring to come before putting a stage 2 on the car...still juggling between the cobb and perring but thats a nother story...my question is...did anyone do any upgrade to their car while having the grinding/notchy issue and if yes, did it get worst with the mods on.

Thanks.

according to the forum the notchness and grinding is one of the characteristics of evo.
it seems like a dsm thing as ive own many first and second gen gsx and tsi and they all had similar feelings in 1-2 and 2-3. I dont know if its normal but it happens. maybe thats why dsms go through tranny fast. haha still love them tho.

I just bought a new 2012 GSR but I have onwed Mitsus for years. The trick to reverse is to put it into 4th and then into reverse. Somehow this aligns the gates and makes it easy to get into reverse. I do this with all my DSMs and worked great. Tried it on the X, and surprised it worked well, too.

I do find the X tranny notchy for a new car. Almost seems that the tranny oil is too thin. I'm going to look up the different oils people are running and maybe do that switch early in the life of this car.
