"The only figures we care about: an expected 300 or more horses from the new high-performance 2.0-liter turbocharged MIVEC engine. This lightweight mill has an aluminum cylinder block (the Lancer Evolution RS has an iron block and aluminum head). The new engine is part of the Global Engine Alliance, for which Mitsubishi jumped into bed with Hyundai Motor and DaimlerChrysler for four-cylinder offspring."

Assuming the X will come in RS, SE, and MR trimlines, that would mean the DE, ES, GTS, SE, and MR would have aluminum blocks, but the RS would have iron? Doesn't it strike you as insane to engineer a block for not one model, but just a single trimline of a model?
Why would they waste the money? You can't just pour Iron into a mold meant for Aluminum. Assuming the shape of the block could be used for both, they'd still have to engineer a whole new production proccess, including contracting a different comapny to cast the block, and a whole separate milling process, since milling tools for aluminum can't be used for iron. All for one block for one trimline (of SIX) for one model. For a company that's clawing its way back from bankruptcy this seems like a boneheaded move.
Plus, has anyone heard of one engine that came with aluminum and iron *blocks*? Heads, yes. But blocks?
An iron 4B11 makes no sense.
Iron is traditionally cheaper than aluminum in materials as well as casting and milling. So I can see why it might be assumed that the cheapest of the Evos would have iron under the hood. But in the overall scheme of things, it doesn't make sense. If they were going to do that, don't you think there would be iron under the hood of the DE at least?
The only way this makes sense to me, is if Mitsu has a ton of old 4G63Ts on-hand and they plan to sneak them under the hood of some special Evo Xs. But if this is the case, I don't think we'd see them in the US. They'd have to go through the emissions process ALL OVER AGAIN which would probably cancel out any savings.
I think this is baseless speculation from someone who isn't thinking things through.
Now, *IF* Mitsubishi does come out with iron under the hood of the RS, and *IF* it is a 4G63T then I would consider getting one. But those are two massive 'ifs' in my mind, so I'm not holding my breath.
This makes absolutely no sense.

The whole point of the world engine is to pass some of the developmental costs off to Mitsubishi's long time partners, Hyundai and Chrysler. Why spend your own money if you cand spend someone else's?
I do believe the iron block will be used for current platform shared models other than mitsu. Thats the point of sharing components, so it isn't just one trim level.
Say what happened to the dodge caliber srt-4, maybe that would get the iron block too.
Edit: never mind its got an aluminum 2.4l

Regarding the power and the trans, Car and Driver made an article about the Evo X
Power estimated to be right under 300hp...

I agree, but it keeps popping up as if it were fact.
Sorry, I should have been more specific, I was exaggerating a little to make a point. But the automotive division of Mitsubishi was certainly headed that way.
Exactly, though Mitsu footed some of the bills, I'm sure. As you said it's a "World Engine." Which makes it even more unlikely they designed an iron variant for a select few cars.
I can't wait until the specs and full information are available. There's some rumors floating around that people are taking as fact. It'll be good to see them either confirmed or put to rest. Personally, I'm eager to find out how much of my own speculation will be confirmed.
Mitsubishi has not, nor is currently in bankruptcy.

Well I am taking Car and Driver's word over "Draco-REX" that there will be an iron block RS.
If the rally car is still running an iron block, then the must have a production model with the same engine variant.

LOL. aluminum engines are not weak, it comes with iron sleeves in it. All new turbo cars have aluminum engines these days due to better cooling and weight savings. The new skyline (aluminum motor), the new evo x (aluminum motor), bmw 335i twin turbo (aluminum motor), subaru sti (aluminum motor), mazdaspeed 3 (aluminum motor), saturn sky (aluminum motor). the list goes on...
Whats this on the RS model having an iron block? Will it be the 4G63??

And I'll take Draco-REX word over Car And Driver because C&D is just making up stories to get more hits when in fact they have no clue about the new Evo X engine specs because Mitsubishi hasn't finalized anything. And if anything, I give another vote to a fact that Car And Drivers claim of iron block RS makes absolutely no sense at all. Why would Mitsubishi develop a single engine for a single makes single trim that won't sell in volume anyway? Mitsubishi is not Ferrari. Makes no sense at all. And you should have seen, artists renditions and "spy shots" from C&D of the next Evo from few years ago, it doesn't look anything like they predicted. They are just another clueless magazine trying to get as much traffic as possible.
Don't believe all the "facts" you read.
Personally, I can't wait for the Evo X for a number of reasons. Besides the obvious, I'm eager to see where I've guessed right and wrong. I'll try to remember to post a tally.
I may be stubborn and opinionated, but I'm also fair and honest. If I'm wrong I'll say so.
This is enlightening....Sorry if posted before...

That shows more like 320/325, an excellent interior (loaded), two choices of tranny and all the electronic toys that put this beast in line with a 911 Turbo with tiptronic and PSM. Now thats value considering that the Porsche has a price tag with juice attached in the $150K areana in most areas!
I want one in Black or White!!!
Mitsu is not in any type of bankrupt or has it been...

Keep in mind, I have never indicated that my posts are anything more than speculation, unlike the magazines. Car magazines will speculate wildly and post it as fact well before any real specs are released. I'll wager we won't see many more 'revelations' like this from now on. That way, if they guess right, they can say "We had it here first!" But if they were wrong, then it was long enough ago that noone will remember and they can sweep it under the rug.

Hopefully car and driver has a reason or justifacaiton for the statement other than to be wrong. It just seems too detailed of a statement to go and say there will be an iron block in the RS, just to be guessing and not based on any factual information. I am not betting on the chance of one, I am just saying that they might know some things more than other speculators.
I just had a tuning appointment with the biggest and best evo tuner in europe that also retails for a major US evo tuning company... He has seen and driven the evo X multiple times on the Nurburgring, and said it is astonishingly more responsive in both power and handling...
