Why didn't you buy the STI?
I drove both before i picked up my evo, and have even ridden with some at track days. The handeling on the evo is better, but the STi has more power out of the box. You can feel that little extra power when sitting in it. But to me it was the way they look, they just look better.
Iam opposite of Advanap I work part time as a Volkswagen Tech and went to the Mitsu dealer that is owned by the same guy as the Volk dealership that I work for and they would not pay me a bit of attention so I contacted the general service manager about it and went and picked up my Evo..... anyway have driven both, the STI is a nice car but an EVo is in a different catagory IMO

My wife gets the next new car, which should be quite soon, but she's not about the Evo. She thinks the STI and the Evo are both a bit on the "immature ricer" side, and does not want a vehicle with a manual transmission. I'm trying to talk her into a Forester XT or Legacy GT. I guess they're the next best thing for what she may be looking for.....

STI felt better for daily driving versus the Evo's tendency to boost suddenly. I also felt more planted (Jeremy Clarkson actually states this in Top Gear) though I am the first to admit that the Evo's handling is much sharper.
I didn't like the Evo's steering wheel "bouncing" from left to right because of its super sensitive steering; the clutch play on the Evo was also too long for my taste and shifting just didn't come as naturally (felt jerky and/or overrevving between gears).
Interiorwise, I love the Evo's seats and the way they felt...my first words were "Oh man" when I felt those Recaros. I really couldn't care less about the dash for either cars but I guess people say the STI's looks more well put together. Meh.
Lastly, I didn't base my decision on how I was treated at dealerships since I know the cars have nothing to do with that. I was treated very well at some Subaru and some Mitsu dealers, I was treated not so well at some Subaru and some Mitsu dealers (even with my credit score on hand sporting a 720+ FICA).
Whenever asked about either car, my response is the same:
If I wanted a weekend, track monster I would have definitely gone for the Evo. Stupid power and speed for much cheaper and the handling to go along with it. Since this is my only car and obviously my daily driver, the STI gives me more than I could possibly want and the comfort to go with it. Also, whether it's true or not, STIs seem to appeal to an older crowd and Evos seem to appeal to a younger crowd. I am an older crowd
Good luck on your purchase. You cannot possibly go wrong with either car. Oh for what it's worth, I'm not shy in saying that I love the Evo look over the STIs, especially in photographs. But in person, I'd say there's a certain refined look to the 06s (which I have) that can only be appreciated through the naked eye. Aspen White on Gold FTW!

I also noticed that the STI feels like it is much more planted on the ground. Weird.

Head into a corner, and upon mid-corner when you get back on the gas for a quick exit, the weight transfer causes the front end to lift, resulting in understeer. That's nothing an anti-lift kit (ALK) won't take care of. With the ALK, it will keep the front end planted. STis with nothing more than an ALK will handle just as well as an Evo will, if not slightly better. Driving an STi/STI with/without an ALK is like night and day.
The largest problem with the STi's handling lies within the front suspension geometry. The ALK will relocate some of the suspension components, resulting in a much more competent suspension geometry.
