GSC cams are very good, and I suspect he has S1's which are very mild. But I guess you can always find a reason not to like a car if you try.

my reason for not wanting a car with cams, especially with stock almost everything else) is cause to me it says that the car had a lot more mods on it before, most likely a bigger turbo, very likey revved past 8k... and then they decide to sell it and put all the easy to do stuff back to stock. while for a lot of its life it was running a much higher power level... so its not so much that "I don't want cams", its more that I want a car thats lower on the abuse scale... which I know is a stretch for a car like the evo...

one of the evo's I looked at yesterday had cams, and man that thing was quick... even compared to my mustang... I'm not used to being impressed with power anymore, haha... usually more disappointed with a friend bragging about how fast his car is..

I see. You probably want to look for an evo with the stock intake, exhaust, cat, and tune. Also, if the miles are low enough, see if its still on the stock pads/rotors.

Cams really bring them to life, even on the stock turbo.

I would check out the blue one. Do a comp and leak down test and go from there. Even if it was sitting at 500hp and 400tq for 30k miles, its probably fine. They don't stay together at that power level unless they're tuned well.

haha, no, I'm fine with most bolt on's, in fact I'd prefer it cause that means I don't have to spend the money on it...

and for the record, I see your sarcasm

You might be able to check the O2 housing and see if the bolts look like they have been off recently/ever.

I tried looking at that... I either don't know what to look at or its impossible to see without taking apart some of the car... if its visible by just looking under the hood, can someone point out exactly what to look at?

Sound like you're searching for a unicorn at a mule price.

Gonna be tough

And it can be really tough to tell if a "100% stock" car always has been. Especially 9 years after the last one was built. People don't buy them to leave them stock.

Good luck with that search. If you find one, be ready to pay 😢

The O2 housing connects the turbo hot side to the downpipe. You might need to take off the exhaust manifold heat shield (the heatshield bolts might also tell you if the heat shield has ever been off).

This thread has a good pic of the exhaust manifold-hotside-O2 housing https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sa...-radiator.html

Basically, any and all of the connecting bolts might look like they have been off ever.

maybe not exactly mule price, but more like regular horse price... haha.. and like I said, I don't need it to be 100% stock, just 100% stock longblock

but this is another reason why I'm kinda leaning s2k taking reality into account

I know where it is with the engine sitting on a stand... but is it visible when its in the car with everything fully assembled? bumper and radiator and everything on...? and aren't there heat shields in the way typically?

If you look down & right along the passengers side of the heat shield you should be able to see a couple bolts. Or jack the front up and look up from the bottom just follow the exhaust up. Not a bad idea to look at the bottom of the car (for rust/damage) while you are down there.

Ahh.....but do You think an S2k that was some guy's first "real car" after owning a Civic and revved to 9k from stop light to stop light is going to be a safer bet than an Evo with cams?

😁

haha... touche...

but, I'm looking at an AP2, which rev's to 8k... and it may have been revved to 8k, but only with 200whp... on a bottom end capable of support 600+

and lets face it, most s2k owners are hard parkers... unless its a guy over 50... then it prolly gets raped at the track every weekend...

An S2000 is a great choice for a light rwd track day car. Probably a lot easier to find one in stock form too.
