Mk V Supra - My Evo's Replacement?

Here is my first real comparison to the Evo. Haven't driven mine since before I got the Supra. So it's kinda like driving it for the first time again.

After 2 days of driving my Evo back to back, I love the Supra even more. The Supras steering is so much quicker/more touchy than the Evos (yes it is possible). Evo wins in feedback feel though. Supra has a way heavier feel (in the steering itself) which I really like. The Evos steering is quite light in comparison. Power delivery is no comparison. Supra hands down wins. Granted it has 150whp more at this point.... but still, the no lag is nice. Evo doesn't feel like it comes to life until 3500 rpm. You can really feel this in 5th and 6th at lower rpm (Freeway situations). Supras 1500 rpm earlier powerband is just awesome. I have the same tires on both cars and overall traction goes to the Supra. But the Evos tires are at the end of their life so I'm not sure its a good comparison (Evo also has a good amount of suspension work done/Supra is stock).

Yes this is mostly a daily driver perspective comparison but my track comparison isn't far off.

And actual results from the race. I was a bit off but not much.

Sounds like Supra wins for daily driving duties, but I think we all figured on that.
HP is dependent on how each car is tuned.
Power band at low RPM isn't as much of a factor in race situations.
Sounds like, for some, it comes down to the same 'ol questions.
Looking at prices of Supras, I'm thinking about making a jump to a P-car. I have my eye on a '15 GT3 that keeps eyeing me back.

Kaj - how are supra prices compared to a 15 gt3!? Those cars are still crazy expensive. I know you do more big tracks over auto-x so the lag really doesn't matter. I do more auto-x over big tracks so insta boost helps greatly. On some of the courses I have run, with a stock turbo, the Evo felt very laggy. Can't say I have ever been in a situation in the Supra where I have felt lag. Also can't say a NA car with the same power wouldn't be awesome everywhere....

Well, the Supras are priced at over half of the GT3 I'm looking at. At that point, seems worth it to me (GT3 is my all-time time favorite road/track car).
As for boost and lag: you got it- I don't notice any on road course. At AutoX, I hit the gas earlier so that I'm just short of being sideways on exit, effectively compensating for any lag. It's a lot of work and practice, but a fun game to play. I like finding work arounds for disadvantages. 😁

Let the Supra modding begin! Should be bolting on a good 50whp this weekend.

Nice, look forward to the review. Is that a GESI cat dp?

I’m still searching for a Supra. Turbulence Grey is basically impossible to find new. All used supra prices are more than MSRP new and any new Supras are 5-10k over MSRP, or yellow, which looks like a McDonalds car.

Real bad time for me to be looking for a new car, lol

Yep, 5" GESI cat DP. Wouldnt have it any other way. Its one of the few that wont set off the check engine light. Going to bump the boost up about 4 psi as well.

The new car market really does suck right now. I was helping a friend get a Blazer last week (and I have a ton of connections with GM) and I still could not get one for her. No discounts, no color choices, no trim choices, its just here is the ONE we have coming in, take it or leave it.

You can always order a Supra. They dont mark them up if you do it like that but you have to wait a couple months to get it.

I'm trying to convince my girlfriend to buy a Supra as her next car. She just landed a CFO job and misses her "sporty and cute" IS200 F-Sport. I've got her convinced on the looks but I haven't convinced her that it's okay to let me modify and race it. And for as weak as MAP has become for 4G63 parts that's a pretty nice looking downpipe.

Heck ya! Just dont let her get the 4 banger. They run good but the I-6 is so much better (plus all the other goodies that come with it).

I was surprised by the quality of the DP. It is truly a nice piece. Not even made in China! Its one of the 3 DPs that dont set a check engine light and by far the cheapest of those 3. I think the closest one with the GESI cat is $400 more and 6x the wait time. Lots of good reviews so far on it.

Agreed on difficulty finding a supra.

It has, however, got me looking at a certain 6yo car that I always thought was outta reach.

Win/win. Evo goes up for sale as soon as my other toy sells.

I'm kinda getting a little stoked, to tell the truth. I'll miss the Evo, though.

Got the down pipe installed and boost turned up! The exhaust is much louder which is what I wanted. The shift farts sound like gunshots now. Definitely a good increase in power. Before it wouldn't spin in 2nd. Now that's all it does. 3rd gear is questionable at times too. Super easy install on everything. $1300 well spent.

Unfortunatly, that is not true. All the dealers I have chatted with want over MSRP if you order as well.

I found a incoming 2022 in White. 58k MSRP and they want 3k over. I'm strongly thinking of putting a deposit on it even though it pains me to pay MSRP or over for a car.

I didnt think they could legally bump the price if you ordered one..... may be wrong though. You definitely need one!

VD dyno results from adding the DP and 4 psi boost (I will try to get a stock boost graph tomorrow). Now we see what fine tuning this off the shelf map can do. Dont mind the late spool up, I didnt start the test until 2500 rpm. Next time I will do 1500 rpm start. First grey line is 3000 rpm.

White is right. $3k over isn't too bad if it's something you really want.
