Tow Rigs, What do you have/use?
Just got this a couple weeks ago as my winter car and occasional tow rig. It has the heavy duty tow package with coolers and 3.73s, but I guess I should install a larger trans cooler (thinking the 40k Tru-cool). Not sure if I’m going to buy a trailer or just rent as needed. I drive my Evo to local events at Summit Point, so this would be for VIR and NJMP trips mostly.

Would you guys winch an Evo 8/9 onto a trailer with a tow hook attached to the bumper beam? I think the load on a tow hook could be pretty heavy pulling the car up the ramps. What a disaster if the tow hook ever failed mid-pull up the ramps and no one was in the car...
I absolutely would if I ever felt the need to invest in a winch. If your tow hook can't handle being pulled up ramps it shouldn't even be used as a tow point in the first place. I've had my car rescued and pulled around track with my sparco tow strap attached to by bumper beam without issue.
its the best way to load. so nice and easier on the clutch!
had a winch a few trailers ago and loved it. need to get time to mount it in the current trailer
hoping i can get some LMS about what determines a car's tow rating, and towing in general.
i'm looking at a few family suvs, but they all have a tow capacity of roughly 5k, which is pushing the limit with the evo and anything else in it.
what can i do to improve the tow rating? i can get a BBK, use high temp brake fluid, better coolant, better trans fluid, look for a trans cooler - other than that, what is determining the tow? is it literally the subframe itself?

Brakes and vehicle dynamics dictate towing ability. I wouldn't tow over a vehicles rate capacity. I would get something that is rated for at least 7k to tow the evo.Car + Car trailer, tools, fuel, etc, is easily over 5k lbs.
