I am in the same boat as you Bryan... my old 2.4L was making a horrid ticking noise for like 3 years... I finally bit the bullet and ordered a new short block and had a shop do the labor... mind you my brother is the shop manager at a hot rod shop and I am pretty familiar mechanically with these cars, we were more than capable of completing it in a relatively short manner, but neither of us had the extra time, (me in the Navy on sea duty & my brother finishing his 29 model A cash rod)... thankfully I was super patient and held off until I built up the slush fund a bit more to have Spec-Ops take care of the labor...
Here is a pic of his car completed... worked on that quite a bit with him as well...
If you go the OEM engine route, would you consider a pre loved unit out of a totaled car?
That's how I get my engines and I've dealt with a local company that deals with totaled cars, depending on the mileage you could get a long block (VC to oil pan) for around $3-3500. The engines come out running and they do warrantee if there's a unforeseen issue.
The 08's have a provision for a upper chain guide that was deleted in 2010+ and the casting is also cleaner 2010+ but it doesn't affect the runners or combustion chambers.
Other then that is the exact same head.

Good to know, so it will bolt on no problem and perform the same it sounds like?
