The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
Adding you to the quotes list in my next post.
Yeah, I think I've had that happen from time to time with every manual I've ever driven over the past 25 years.
Is this not the same gearbox that was in the VIIIs?
Depends on what you've been driving. If you've been living in Hondas, you've been driving among the best manual gearboxes in the world. I've driven a few Mustangs, a Vette, and a Viper, and they made the gearboxes in the X feel like a knife through butter.
The Evo's gearbox HAS to be tough, because it's routing 300 lb-ft of twist through an AWD drivetrain with limited-slips diffs all around and incredibly sticky OEM rubber. By comparison, the trans in a Honda (with no low-end torque - and not much up higher - going through a front-wheel-drive trans with an open diff ) simply does not have to be as tough because what little grunt there is will spin a front tire before ripping teeth off a cog.

The Pattern
Below are some quotes from folks supporting a pattern being seen. This might not be the whole story, but no doubt it's a big part of it and explains why some people report no problems and some report nothing but problems.

1st to 2nd, shift on 4k+ rpm...the tranny loves to shift with no grinds
The more I baby the tranny, the more it disappoints me. My evo x is now 14,500 miles, but the 15k service was done @ 13,000 miles. (OEM diaqueen used on the tranny)

i have the same notchy issue from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, what fluids do you recommend or is there a built tranny out there yet to buy. Im looking for around 650awhp so where would i get my tranny build to hold it when these dont seem to hold my 375awhp to well
you guys are complaining for nothing (notching and grinding when shifting gears at low rpm)

if you have problems shifting at low rpm, just hold the clutch to the floor and pull the shift lever slower.

I posted a thread about this but thought folks might notice my question better here.
My '10 X was shifting ok (read basically notchy) until my track event on Saturday. About half way through the day, 3rd and 4th became harder to engage and extremely vague. It was as if the notch indicating the transition from neutral to in-gear had disappeared. There is no grinding and the gears are remaining engaged.
Now 2 days later 3rd feels ok but 4th still feels stiff and spongy. I can feel a bit of a vibration when moving the lever slowly into and out of 4th gear. Again, no grinding...
Any ideas what's happening?
Thanks in advance!

My 08 X GSR when cold is clunking when shifting from 1st to 2nd and sometimes 2nd to 3rd. I even have the shifting into reverse issue where it just can't find the gear.
However, this morning on my way to work another noise started to happen. I was in 4th gear and letting the engine slow me down before down shifting and a loud clunking noise started what sounded like under the stick shift. I quickly gave it gas and the noise went away. The noise started at 3000-2000 RPM.
When I was on the highway in 5th gear and traffic started to get bad I did the same thing and let the engine slow the car down. The clunking noise started again and this time would go away when giving the car gas. The car only has 15k miles on it so it's still under warranty so I am going to take it to the shop tonight.
When the clunking noise starts it still drives ok and nothing really noticable happens with driveability. If just sounds like the gear shifter is going to shoot through the roof.

Update: after 1400 miles shifts are smooth even after cold start. Also, I make sure the clutch pedal goes all the way to the floor. Sometimes I still hit a syncro problem when need to double press the clutch to engage, although this happens extremely rarely now.

This is the same problem's happening to my X right now. I took it back to the dealer and have them look at it, and they are saying that they wont cover it with the warranty bcuz the clutch line been abbused, tranny could be affected as well. The car only has 8700 miles and its just a weekend car so why are they saying that the car is abbused?
i thought it was just me, but 2nd to 3rd shift is always notchy. and sometimes i cna't get into reverse, i have to put the clutch in and try 2-3 times, sometimes it works fine but usually twice is the charm
Its been a while since I posted an update in this thread.
So since I have switched to Redline fluids, the shifting has dramatically been improved.
I suspect the combo of oils and the fact that my tranny has 25,000kms make it right.
I am so happy that I forget that I once had issues- I only get reminded when I look at this thread.
REDLINE + mileage = happy tranny.

hey ive had the usual grinding since i drove my x off the lot and i found a dealer thats actually going to rip out the tranny and attempt to fix it. Im only afraid this is going to just lead to more complications as dealing with the transmission is a very difficult thing and these people at this dealer not only told me to get my 1st oil chang eat 8000mi but they also filled my x with 87 octaine gas...so they are not the brightest..idk wether to go ahead with this or not...any input/experiance with this???
