well here is the actual response

Hi Ernest,

I have discussed you warranty inquiry with my rep at Blouch, who has informed me of the leading cause for the damage to your turbo.

He did inform me that the wastegate flap was held open, preventing a good seal with the turbo (but this did not cause the turbo failure). What caused the turbo failure is overspeed of the turbo itself. He has indicated that "The turbo's thrust bearing shows major wear on the non load side of the bearing this is always an indication that boost leaks or over speed of the turbo is happening. This created poor lubrication to the bearing system and will result is this type of failure. Turbine shaft shows heat and bearing material transfer and bearings are worn oversized and allowed the compressor and turbine to contact the housings."

I have been informed that this type of damage is not covered under warranty.

Sure would be nice if they provided documentation of the damage. Even with the WG flapper not being shut, it seems odd that the turbo was oversped at only 26 psi of peak boost, and probably less boost out the top where shaft speeds tend to be highest. Was the WG flapper loose when you removed the turbo?

I doubt it really matters, but I ran my BBK-Full to the max (33 psi tapering to 27 psi) on E85 for a few years with no change in shaft play, so the turbo itself is a solid design if it was assembled properly and gets proper lubrication.

so, what exactly kept the flapper open? and how is it that not a warranty issue?

Idk, you never heard of many failures with these when CBRD was selling them. Over speed failures are usually pretty apparent. Unfortunately improper assembly/tolerances can look like the same as overspeeding...

I have a hard time believing he made 500whp on 26psi on that little snail. My car made 480whp on that dyno, at 26psi, with a red, and soft timing on E85 (only 14* out the top). And we stopped tuning due my turbo smoking like crazy from excess crankcase pressure. Which has been resolved.

The flapper was loose not tight like when it was when I installed it.

Jason they are saying that the cause of the damage is due to over spinning and not the flapper. Sooooo I dont know I have to cough up 2k for another turbo.

Can Blouch repair it (presumably at your cost)? Or is it now a bookend.

If it needs new wheels, a new shaft, and a rebuild, it will probably be almost as expensive as buying a new one. And that's if the housings aren't ruined.

i would assume the flapper being open caused the overspin. if they are trying to say the two are unrelated, that would't seem to make much sense.

open wasteagate won't cause an overspeed. Its allowing exhaust around the turbine. It would "underspeed" the turbo, not over speed it...lol
