some dealers are cool some aren't

your warranty was pretty much void the day you drove it off the lot

Your warranty can be voided for anything aftermarket. Although technically under the Magnusson Moss Act they have to prove that your upgraded part caused the malfunction. This doesn't mean much considering Mitsubishi America cannot force a dealership to honor your warranty.

The local Dodge dealership completely refused work on my SRT-4 for having that Mopar rice plate on it (it was a gift.) Although i had Chrysler call the dealership personally to tell them to honor my warranty.....and they still refused. End result is that I had to take my car to another dealership to get the warranty work done!!

You have to pay to play!!

what voids your warranty, and what doesn't

I think it would be cool to have a thread regarding people's experiences with having their warranty voided due to aftermarket stuff being thrown on their cars.

I am fairly sure stereo equipment does not void any warranty (at least it doesn't with my Accord), but I was thinking about upgrading the IC pipes on the evo since the stock ones need t-bolt clamps anyway. Would this void my warranty? If so, would it void the warranty completely, or just the parts that said part would affect?

Also, it would be great to know which parts can be removed easily so as not to let the dealers know. I know exhausts are fairly easily replaced, so if there are other parts that people know about, post your info here.

I am completely mechanically retarded, so it helps for me to know this stuff

I plan to keep my new IX stock, at least until I've established a good relationship with a servicing dealer, and have an opportunity to discuss this very question. Of course, stereo equipment will not affect warranty for "running" gear, although a really big system may affect the battery and charge system warranty. But, I won't install cat-back and re-flash. I'd love to have the extra HP, but not at the cost of losing the warranty on engine and drivetrain.
I'm pretty sure it's going to be hard to find a dealer who'll sign off warranty work on a car with HP mods. I'm also pretty sure there are dealers who will deliberately try to deny warranty for even having an intake mod (or even an aftermarket air filter, probably). I will try to avoid those dealers.
But, one of the big advantages to the EVO is its warranty. I'm not going to throw that away if I can help it. However, if I find a year or so from now, that a dealer won't take care of something under warranty, I'll probably bend a little and start some serious mods.
In the meantime, I think I can live with the stock IX for a daily driver!

From what I know - it's somewhat dependent upon your local dealership of choice...some won't fuss or give you much trouble for basic bolt-on's and then there's those others that trip a lot...

The warranty is incredible (when honored >.<) which is why I really don't want to take any risks, and if I do decide to mod a bit, I want to know if the mods I do can be quickly replaced. I know certain things like an ECU reflash are ways to instantly say goodbye to your warranty.

Anyone found any exceptions to the rule, or found any dealerships that are more leniant than others???

Modify Your Car = Void The Warranty. How hard is that to understand?

Should you REALLY expect any manufacturer of ANY product to warranty that product if it has been altered? I wouldn't. But, then again, I am a little biased as I constantly have clients who swear that they didn't change anything and make a warranty claim, even after they are shown that I have proof of their tampering.

Dishonest people suck.

Pesonally when I started modifying my car the last thing on my mind was warranty claims. When my car left the dealer that was the lasttime it ever saw the place. If your worried about your warranty then dont modify the car.

so lets say you have a cat back and your tranny messes up.. since you have a cat back it should void the tranny warranty? give me a break.. some mods dont affect other parts.. when you mess with the ecu, turbo, boost levels and such then I can see things getting hairy.. an aftermarket filter shouldn't void anything, a cat back shouldn't void warranty unless its an o2 sensor.. but im not a stuck up dealership so what do i know

I understand warranty and what its there for and how it works.. but some things should be ok to do without a hassle.. if you're going to modify might as well just go big and fudge warranty

Wow, so if something unrelated goes wrong, and they blame me for having an intake, I should really suffer right? You're a tool... the point of the thread was not asking how to cheat dealerships, but rather what mod will cause what warranty to be voided, etc.

It could serve as a great tool for people who get BSed by dealerships, which from what I hear, happens quite often. Dishonest... if anything it's the opposite with Mitsu voiding the warranties of stock cars...

Agree, and I do have a problem with the way dealers try to blame that driveline failure on the increased HP (within reason). After all, the Euro-spec EVOs come in at well over 300 BHP, compared with our 280 or so... Clearly, they're not shipping a different driveline to them, so it should handle minor mods just fine. But dealers don't see it that way, most of them anyway.

I asked the district manager at Biggers Mitsubishi when I was getting service done what modifications I could do to my evo and still have warranty. He was really nice and honest and said that the most I could do is cat-back exhaust, intake and a turbo timer. He said that if I alter the boost, ecu or the turbo then I will lose my warranty. It honestly depends on your dealership whether or not you have the option to modify your vehicle.
